Taste Buds Change After Surgery?

Both my senses of smell and taste got heightened right after surgery.  When I walked into our house, from the hospital, I asked what the awful smell was, and no one knew what I was talking about.  I also couldn't stomach certain things  that were fine before surgery, because of taste and/or smell.  At my 2 week follow-up, the NUT said this sensation was common, but it would subside.  It took a few weeks to get back to normal, but it did.

Hi Bonnie,

This was a biggie for me. Everything tasted horrible and even worst smells made me sick.  I had to put a towel under the closed door in my bedroom when my son was making pasta.  My surgeon said this was from the anesthesia.  All I know is it took me 3 months before it got better and I lived on double protein milk.

When I see pre-op members posting about "stocking" up I usually caution them to not buy too much of anything until the get home and see if taste is an issue.

Good Luck!
