How has your diet changed since getting the VSG?

What foods can you no longer eat or drink anymore because you now have the VSG? How did you know that a certain food or drink was a no-no now?

I can eat or drink anything I could pre-op. I choose to make healthier choices now though!

I "know" which foods I shouldn't be eating, like overly processed or high carb foods. That being said, I can eat pretty much anything at a year out. A lot of foods just don't appeal to me anymore. Unfortunately, not sweets. I love sweets too much so I won't keep them in the house. But, I don't crave crappy foods usually, unless I've let carbs creep back in. A lot of people with VSG can tolerate anything. We have to make the actual change in our diets and stick to it.

That is what really worries me because I love carbs and I am a junk food head...I thought there were certain things that made you sick or throw up after surgery.

You might be confusing the VSG with RNY surgery. Some people with RNY "dump" after eating sugary or high fat foods. Some see this as an advantage, though it tends to wear off after some time. Very few people with VSG dump. It's a tool, and you need to work it for the full effect.

and...I don't see how me having surgery would change that..meaning, my cravings for carbs, sweets and junk...

My tastes have definitely changed. Since I can only eat a small amount, I want the good stuff. Like when you have a sandwich. I used to always rip off the crusts and eat the middle. Now, I just want the middle because it's the good part.

I fill my fridge and cabinets with foods that I enjoy and are good for my lifestyle. Every week I buy: mozzarella and pepperjack cheese sticks, sliced buffalo chicken deli meat, Dannon Light N Fit Greek yogurts, pork rinds, and flavored coffee. These are things that I love and work for me.

Last night I really wanted something sweet, so I made a thick frappe with 1/2 scoop chocolate protein powder, water, ice, and instant decaf coffee crystals. Did the trick!

For me, it has been a lot of mental work.  I see a therapist weekly and I've worked really hard to change my habits and the way my brain works.  It's hard sometimes, but it's so much easier than it used to be.  And the weight loss helps too - I don't want to screw it up!

Makes sense because I think a lot of mine is really mental!

I CAN eat anything I want.

I mostly eat lean protein, fruits & vegetables.

I occasionally have pizza, bread, sweets (too many sweets lately) -- but these are treats.
