Number of Calories ????

Greetings

I am 2 1/2 months post surgery ..... and can tolerate almost ALL foods.  ..... my main concern is: ...approx how many calories should I be eating at this point ???? ..... I have really slowed down in my weight loss and am eating about 950 calories with at least 60 grams of protein each day (often much more than that !)

a lot of plans don't count calories and focus primarily on protein. At 2.5 months out I was still getting much of my protein in with shakes so my calories were always around the 600 mark. I've only just recently started eating around 1,000 per day and I'm nearly 7 months out. Your best bet is to talk to your NUT and see what your plan calls for.

you should be eating between 65 and 80 gm protein and almost all your calories should be coming from that

 you should be eating around 600-800 cal less that 30 gm carbs 

 how much protein you need is usually based on your size and activity level

also you need more during the lose phase than on maintenance

My calories crept up with time.  As the swelling went down in my tummy, and it could hold a little more food, my body just wanted a little more. I did the best I could to keep to plan.  At 2 1/2 months, I was probably still getting about 600 to 700 calories a day.  By 6 months it was probably closer to 800, and by 9 months, I was probably near 1000 cals per day.  I held it at 1000 cals/day until I went into maintenance at 15 months post op. 

 

I think you have to judge your own body and what feels right for you.  As someone on this website told me early on, "Remember this is a marathon not a sprint."   What matters is sticking to the plan - not so much about speed as perseverance.

My calories went up over time, but at 2.5m out I was still in the 600-800 range with most coming from low fat dairy including skim milk (fairlife double protein milk), cottage cheese, greek yogurt, and then meat too.  My protein goal was 65+.

950 calories at 2-1/2 months out would have been really high for me considering that I could only eat about 2 oz. of dense protein at a time.  It makes me question what other foods you're eating (carbs? fruit?).  

The 60 grams of protein is great but eventually you want to get that up to 80 grams per day.  Even then I was able to keep my calories at 800-850 per day.

I posted this question about a week ago. I'm a month out and eating between 700-1000 cals a day. I met with my NUT this week and she reviewed my food journal and said that 700-1000 cals a day is NOT too much for me. Definitely ask your NUT - since everyones plan is different. Seems like a lot of people are only eating 500-700 calories a day and thats when your body goes into starvation mode.

Good luck :) and you're doing great - try adding another 15-30g of protein in. My goal is between 80-100g of protein a day. (5'11")

FYI starvation mode is a myth. I mentioned starvation mode in a thread a few weeks back and was totally schooled. My surgeon and my nut were very pleased with a range of 600 to 800 calories per day at 2.5 months out.

My surgeon recommends 80 grams of protein minimum per day, and around 800 calories.  I don't worry about fats and keep the carbs between 30-40 grams.  I now average about 800-900 calories daily.

The first few months after surgery I was keeping the calories between 600-800.

I'm almost 2 months post op

While I don't count calories, they do show up on MyFitnessPal when I log my food so I know how many I'm eating on average.

I'm currently eating between 500-750, 80 grams of protein, and less than 20 carbs a day.
