I know there are tons of posts about nausea and vomiting but I have not been able to find the answer I am looking for in the ones I see. For the past two days I have been very nauseous. Both times I have felt nauseous I took zofran and immediately afterward I have thrown up. I am 4 weeks post op and these are the first two times I have thrown up since surgery. Also when I throw up it isnt even really throw up....more like spit and mucus. Since my stomach is upset it has caused me to have zero appetite and I am so afraid to eat something for fear of it upsetting my stomach. Has anyone else experienced this? I know I probably need to call my surgeon but I dont know if it something that is really serious or not. Any input would be very much appreciated.

Does it happen right after you eat?  It sounds like you might be eating too fast, not chewing well enough.

Definitely call your surgeon, though, it could be serious.

Dehydration can cause nausea.  Are you getting at least 64 ounce of fluid daily?  It can be a vicious cycle.  You are dehydrated and feel sick, so you don't drink because it might make you sick.

The other thought is that you might be lactose intolerant.  That can cause nausea and diarrhea.  Check your protein supplement to make sure it is lactose free.  switch to almond milk or cashew milk and see if it helps.  Yogurt and cheese are usually tolerated well, but dairy milk, cream, etc. can make you very sick.

The two days it happened were days I had not eaten anything yet. It happened before I got a chance to eat. I havent been getting all my fluids in like I should be. I try so hard but it doesnt ever seem to happen. I am afraid to eat anything because I dont want to throw up, and I am afraid to drink anything too. I dont think I am dehydrated though because I dont have most of the symptoms. As far as the lactaid intolerance goes the only protein drink I drink is premier. I have been drinking it a while and it has never upset my stomach.

Nausea is a symptom of dehydration.  64 ounces is the MINIMUM amount you should be drinking.  I drink 120 ounces in order to feel good.  If I don't drink that much, I get nauseated and constipated.  Getting enough fluids in not optional... it's NECESSARY.  My  guess is you ARE dehydrated.  You don't have to show signs of every symptom to be dehydrated.

You can develop lactose intolerance at any time.  Check to see that your Premier protein is whey isolate only.  If it contains whey concentrate, it contains lactose.

So you see now that your body doesn't care how hard it is to get those fluids in - it's going to react to your neglect to your needs.   Dehydration, fatigue come....later....kidney stones are possible.  From the moment they removed that IV from your arm, your daily goal is 64 oz, no ifs, ands, or buts.  It's hard, but non-negotiable, which is what you're learning right now.  Your body is crying out for help right now.  You may need to go to the ER for an IV if you're unable to give yourself what you need.

The more I think about it the more I think you are right rocky. I think I am dehydrated...I feel like it's sometnkng I can fix on my own though. I really don't want to have to go to the ER unless I absolutely have to. Any tips to help me get back in shape when it comes to fluid intake?

Set an alarm to go off every 15 minutes and, every time it goes off, drink 1-2 ounces.  Hot tea might be more soothing to your tummy right now.

I agree with Gwen.  A timer helps to remind you to drink.  Warm liquids seem to sooth and are easier to drink.  Also make sure there is a bottle of water by your bed, so you can sip through the night if you wake up.

I agree with the posts below about dehydration. I also want to suggest that it sounds like the Zofran is hurting you, not helping, if you immediately throw up after taking it. In fact, what you are describing sounds like what we call the foamies or slimies, not true vomiting. And pills can cause the foamies. One of the two times I got them was because my sleeve decided it didn't like my mineral supplement pill.

You may want to check with your doc to see if you can get a prescription for Zofran as an orally dissolving pill or strip rather than something you swallow. A lot of people find these easier on the stomach. You may also want to check in to taking your Zofran on a regular basis, so that you are preventing nausea in the first place, rather than trying to react to it.

Good luck to you!
