Hi,

just wondering if anyone knows if my surgery can be cancelled due to a low bmi?

I had a BMI of 36 but day 5 of my liquid diet has brought me down to 35.

I'm worried if I drop below 35 my surgery will be cancelled.

Does anyone have any insight on this?

thanks 😃

That would surprise me since your surgery is already approved and scheduled.  But, for peace of mind, ask your surgeon.

Ya, I'll do that :)

Don't want to eat to ensure I'll still get surgery and have bloated liver. I know that's a bad idea but have to admit I've thought about it:(

They won't cancel if if it's already been approved. At least the experience with my doctor that has been the case.

the insurance companies usually go by the bmi when you are referred to the surgeon

Hey mikeymantle,

I am getting this covered through Alberta Health Care.  It's not an insurance company.

Lots of advise here but I would check with the people who handle the insurance for your surgeon.  I have a friend who was advise by her surgeon to gain weight in order to qualify for insurance and the hospital submitted her surgery day weight to the insurance company.

My surgery group doesn't require a presurgery diet at all.  Just liquids only after 6pm the day before surgery and nothing after midnight. So the whole "shrinking liver" thing is surgeon specific.

I would check first if possible.

approval is given according to your BMI the day. You start with the surgeon. Insurance won't even know what you BMI is after the approval is made.

If your surgery is already approved by insurance then it is approved, they wont know you lost weight, but if not approved then it comes down to what your surgeon submits. He SHOULD submit your weight based on your initial visit. Good luck!
