flu shot??
Sorry, I can't help, but I'm interested in the replies. I am pre-op and awaiting insurance approval. I was offered the flu shot at my last PCP appt. I usually get one on the advice of my Dr because of my diabetes, etc. Last year was the first year that I didn't feel well (cold like symptoms, run down and a VERY sore arm!) after the shot and I just figured it would be Murphy's Law that I would get it and then get a call that I could have the surgery and I'd feel like crap going into it. I elected to wait. If my date ends up being sometime in December and I have a few weeks to recoup (in case I get those side effects again) I will likely go ahead with it before surgery so I don't have to risk the shot during the time I am getting very little nourishment.
I think checking with your surgeon is the best suggestion, just so you can confirm. But, I am fairly certain that any surgery weakens your immune system, and so does dramatic weight loss. So, I plan to get my flu shot for sure! But, I'm almost 9 months out from surgery.
ALL hospitalized patients are offered the flu shots between the months of (I think) September and March. There are a very few exceptions, one being having a temperature of over 100F in the last 24 hours. This includes surgical patients.
Individuals who should not get the flu vaccine before talking with their dr's include: those allergic to eggs or to any component of the vaccine, people with a history of Guillain-Barre syndrome, children under 5 who have a reactive airway problem (such as asthma), or those who have a moderate to severe febrile illness. These guidelines are from ACIP (advisory committee on immunization practices) and supported by the Infectious Disease Society and others.
Ebola has been much in the news lately with associated fear and even panic. One thing Ebola in the US has done is highlight other, largely preventable, contagious illnesses. Influenza last year claimed the lives of more than 50,000 people in the US alone. These were disproportionately young and fairly healthy individuals, not the frail and elderly we usually associate with such illness. Can you still get the flu if you have been vaccinated? Yes, but you are much less likely to do so. Please get vaccinated...(stepping off soapbox now).
