So went to appt last week at 6 weeks out. My Nut told me I wasn't eating enough calories. I was eating 6-800 she said She wanted me eating 1200-1400 with no more than 30 carbs a meal/ snack. So I'm eating Breakfast @ 7 usually a shake. then at 9 a Greek yogurt. lunch at 1130 usually meat of some kind (300 cal range) then 230 a protein bar ones that are under 200 cal. and over 15 gems protein per nut then dinner around 530 meat of some sort and a side then a snack fruit or cheese around 830. I'm hitting 1100 cal day doing this but only lost 1 pound this week. even with working out almost everyday. am I eating to much. do I keep doing this higher cal. or do I back off. so confused.
mmmm it may be that each doctor has different nutritional instructions but MBC, the place I am going to specifies 800 calories immedaitely post op and only over 1200 for maintenance once you reach your goal weight. I went with my mom last year and she followed the same 800 calories a day. I already have my post op diet, I got it as soon as I scheduled my own surgery and see the same instructions.
Wow...amazing that you are able to get that much in at 6 weeks out. The popular wisdom here is staying under 800 calories a day for weight loss mode and upping this for maintenance once you reach your goals. I was in the 6-800 range with about 50 gr carbs a day and 70-80 gr protein a day for well over a year, then increased to 1000-1200. no way would I have lost anything at 12-1400 straight out of the gate after surgery. The whole point of the surgery is to enable us to go super low cal medically supervised. That is why we also take vitamins and supplements. Normies diet on 1200 a day... Many nutritionists give advice to bariatric patients based on what they would advise anyone but we had 85% of our stomachs removed for a reason. We could not lose and maintain like "normal" people.
Fwiw, I went to 1200 calories in January after a body fat dunk test set my RMR at 1700. I stalled, more or less, and was losing nowhere near the pound per week that they said I'd lose by dropping 500 calories a day like would happen for normies. I went back to 1000 and started to lose again, but didn't really see results till I went back to 800. Of course, everyone's body is different and you may have to experiment a bit to find what works for you.

Sleeved 6/12/13 - 100 pounds lost to get to goal!
Some NUTs seem to be experimenting with people to see if it will work if they eat a lot of calories. I believe that they are wasting the honeymoon period after surgery when it is so easy to stay low calorie and lose quickly. I am almost seven years out and maintain at 1400. To lose a pound a week I need to go back to 800 calories a day.
I am glad that they were not giving that kind of advise when I had my surgery or I would not have reached my goal.

I'm 3 and 1/2 months out I can only get on 600-8 00 calories a day.. (that's on a good day) 1st off I can't see how you can get all that in at only 6 weeks out ... seems like an awful lot to me. .. what a waste of the honeymoon period ...just my opinion. .. maybe you should try to talk to your nut or Dr again... All Dr's are different... best of luck to you !!! :-)

Wow! I'm 7 months out and have yet to eat that many calories. I am usually around 600 to 700. Did your NUT say why she advised you to eat that many calories? Is she an experienced bariatric nut?

My docs have also said that they wanted me to shoot for 1200 calories, but be getting at minimum 1000. Screw that. Back before surgery when I would exercise regularly and really count calories and eat healthy I would eat 1400-1600 calories and still really struggle to shed pounds, so I know that while eating 1200 calories might work for some, it's not going to work for me. I get between 600-800 per day and I feel just fine. As far as I'm concerned, as long as my blood work checks out ok and I feel good and I'm losing weight, then I'm going to do what works for me.
1200 to 1400 calories a day would have been way too many for me during weight loss. I was getting 600 to 800 a day at 6 weeks out, and didn't increase to 800 to 1000 until 6 months post op. I am now maintaining at 1100 calories a day. I think I'd gain weight at 1200 to 1400!
best wishes,
