Doubting Family? Help!

Thank you for your comment. I just took my Mom to the pre-op surgical consult (after months of other appointments), and I think that is what freaked her out. She is hearing all this stuff for the first time, instead of the months that I have had to prepare for it.

I hope I can address your concerns.  I went thru the same thing before surgery, and it was ME talking myself out of it.  I did so well on my pre-op diet that I wondered if I could do it on my own.  But the first sign of stress, I was wearing a path to the refrigerator, and I remembered how many times I'd failed at dieting.  The surgery really works.  I got to 385 pounds while trying to diet.  Once I had the surgery, I was able to stick with the diet and succeed.  I had never had such a success without the surgery.

The surgery changes your body chemistry.  the experts don't know why it works, but it does.  It may be the cutting of the nerves that control the metabolism, it might be the reduced tummy size.  It might be the reduced hormone production or the change in the stomach bacteria.  No one knows, but it does work.  So stop doubting yourself.  If you've been struggling with your weight for a while and you've tried diets and they didn't work, then its time for a new approach.  And Weight loss surgery is the only thing that does work for most people.

You hang in there, and you'll be so happy you did.  The sleeve really works and once its healed, you won't even know - except for the reduced stomach capacity and the shift in your compulsion to overeat.

best wishes,

Carol

Thank you for your comment. I am encouraged by your kind words. I am a stress eater too, and sometimes I do still worry about how I will cope with stress once my surgery is complete (next week!). May I ask how you handle your stresses now that you've had the VSG? Do you still feel the "compulsion to overeat" as you said? Or is that just the "head hunger" that everyone talks about? How do you handle that now?

My mom was/is the same way. So much so that I decided not to tell her when I had my surgery.  She went through the motions of being supportive, but I could tell she still had her doubts.  In a few weeks when I see her again and I'm down 40lbs from when I last saw her maybe she'll be a believer.  I still have 3 weeks of liquid diet before I can move to soft proteins and then I'll let he know.

Thanks.  I've lost 12 lbs in the past week post-op.  Going to start going to the gym tomorrow and trying to walk 30 min on the treadmill hopefully it will start melting off quicker.
