Here's the thing! You can't take it with you when you go and if you are like a lot of us on here the longer you are heavy the worse your health is. Imagine the amount of fun you could have with your kids if you werent too heavy to do it. Imagine the better sex you can have if you don't get tired in the middle. Imagine being able to walk/run/ride a bike with your family and ENJOYING it! I am able to do things I couldn't before therefore I don't have to pay someone else to do them.

I still hate gardening due to a bad back but all the above mentioned things are soooooooo much better. Plus I can garden a heck of alot longer than I used to without severe pain.

Unless the 20K will put you in major debt I say go for it. The amount you will save on food will be amazing. I find I spend a lot less of predone/premade junk too.

I live in the Pittsburgh area but drove to Mooresville, NC for my sleeve with the wonderful Dr. Ryan Heider at Lake Norman Center for Surgical Weight Loss.  It was $12,000, and he offers complication insurance through BLIS.  He has done more than 1000 surgeries and is a center of excellence.  It was a fantastic experience, and I would recommend him to anyone.  They are all so accomodating to out of towners. If I had stayed in town, it would have cost me about $22,000.  They have a great website that even lists the pricing for selfpay if you have any interest.  I am 11 days post op today and doing great!  Good luck!

I've seen numerous posts about people going to Mexico for surgery - and it's a lot less expensive.  Maybe you should read some of those posts - people seem very happy with the doctor and his staff.  Also, is that the full charge for the surgery or the self-pay cost -- I've also read that people work with the hospital and end up paying a lot less than 20K.

Good luck to you, whichever way you proceed.

I too am a self pay and have done A LOT of research (engineer by degree - if you know the type).  I had fully expected to go to Mexico because there are 2 Doctors there that are top surgeons in the procedure Ungson and Aceves - Aceves also has great reputation for sleeve from what I've read.  My wife is/was opposed to me going to Mexico, however we Americans can be a bit ethnocentric in believing we are the best (both my sisters are in the medical field and I could tell you stories).  If I hadn't found a vetted surgeon in central NJ to perform the surgery for $13k (basically the same as Mexico) I would be saying adios mamacita!  I still have trepidation about having a non-authorized procedure for fear of complications in the states - If there are complications in Mexico, it would only cost $100/day.  It's a bit funny, as I have a double standard - for me Mexico is not a concern and it annoys me that my wife would make an issue over it however if it were my children or wife - I would want it done stateside - illogical I know, but I'm a man - do as I say not as I do. FYI, I'm in your forum because I was searching self-pay issues.  Good Luck!!!!

There are Dr's here in the states that charge quite a bit less. There is one here in Las Vegas (Dr Umbach) and he is highly rated and experienced. I think he charges around 10k? Check around, esp if you could knock 5-10K off.
