x-post, follow up appointment, skating NSV, and...ouch
Yesterday I had my 5 month follow up with the NUT & NP at Kaiser Fontana. Both ladies were very pleased with my progress so far. The NP shared that they expect their sleeve patients to only lose 70% of their excess weight within a year. I am at 86% excess weight lost since I started classes. They both told me to keep doing what I'm doing because it is working. However, I "fudged" the MFP diaries that I had to turn in a little bit because they don't want to see anything over 80 g of protein a day. I was chastised for that at my last appt. I do what most of the vets do. Kaiser's plan also includes way to many starchy carbs. I'm not going there. So that is how my afternoon went.
Later on, I had my ice skating class. It was going really great. For the first time since I was 15, my feet left the ice. No, it wasn't a traditional jump as we all know them from watching the pros. It was just a series of hops, but I landed them successfully. That was way cool. Worked on some new, old moves, which was also going well. Then...a simple forward grapevine, and bam, I fell really hard. Not much padding left, so ouch. One of my classmates wears crash pads, I am thinking about getting me some. Or, possibly padded bike shorts. I know there are many more falls in my future as I re-learn my favorite sport. I also have to convince my body that it is alright to try these moves. My mind is more than willing, I just need to convince my body to play along.
Sorry about the "ouch"...but I love this post...
It just highlights how, much more enjoyable life is when we stop and do the things to 1) take care of ourselves and 2) make ourselves happy....and honestly, when we do that, we are so much better to and for the others in our lives...and those who depend on us.
You have inspired me to get out there and find the parts of myself that I have lost...now that I have lost some of the (fat) parts I never wanted to find in the first place :)
Linda, such great news. Keep up the great work!
I admire you for being able to skate. All my years of watching figure skating have taught me that landing jumps, even "hops," requires one to be just so on those blades and so forth. Hope you can resolve the ouch factor.
