Tis' the season for sweets and spicy nuts in my house!!  I made some 'bar nuts' the other day thinking that I could eat them instead of all the holiday sweets that keep showing up in my house.  Boy was I wrong!  The last two times that I had them I was so sick to my stomach I thought I was dying.  Same filling happened when I ate peanut butter a couple months ago.  I have also had a couple of bites of sweet things and got so ill that I prayed that I would just throw up.  The last time was at a family Christmas party where I had two tiny bits of banana pudding and thought I was going to die.

I should be happy that it affects me that way so maybe I'll quit eating them.  I'm trying but sometimes my head just takes over!

Has anyone else had trouble with peanuts or sugar after their VSG?

I have been very lucky in that I have an "iron" sleeve for the most part.  There has only been one thing that has so far shown some issues and that is cantaloupe.  I was at a grocery store that had samples.  I took one and felt off shortly after.  Since it was only a sample size it wasn't a really bad situation.  Other than that my only issues remain eating too fast and perhaps an ounce too much.

I am so extremely broke that I still at about 7 months out have not purchased a scale to weigh things.  I rely on buying things that are portioned in a way that I know the size or weight ahead of time.  For example I know that if I bought some porkloin that was pre-made and sliced then weighed at the grocery store I could easily get to the weight by eating it as is if it is small enough or halving it to get to the correct portion.

Anyway it is a learning experience and a lot of people do end up with issues to things that are naturally sweet.

Good Luck.

It isn't well known but VSG'rs can have dumping symptoms much like those with RNY. I have a friend who was sleeved 5 days before me and gets it with any tiny bit of sugar. I get it if I have a bit too much sugar (I am in maintenance). With RNY many will dump on fats, too, so that may be part of it. I have heard that whether or not you will have this depends upon how close to your duodenum your sleeve is but I am not sure if I am remembering right.

I guess this is a trial and error thing. My head takes over too which is why I get sick on too much sugar. I know it but after some time I forget it and then BOOM! I am in bed thinking I am going to die.

I never tolerated sweets all that well before surgery and still stick to dark chocolate as my go-to.

Really nutty things or if I don't chew my trail mix nuts well enough can give me kind of a crampy feeling in my stomach. And sadly - salads don't work for me any more. I LOVE salad, but the lettuce does not love me now.

I can eat ice cream, but in extreme moderation. My head is working surprisingly well over this holiday season and I am luckily not working (on purpose) this month so I don't have the office goodies at hand.
