Is pain with drinking water normal?

I'm 3 days out of surgery and every time I take a drink of water or juice or soup, it either makes me want to throw up or hurts like I'm being punched in the gut.  Is this typical?  How do I keep the fluids down? This is miserable!

Yes. Or at least it was for me. I am five days out. I can finally drink without pain. I ate ice chips & sugar free Popsicles for 3 1/2 days.

Just take tiny little sips. You likely still have lots of gas inside you from the surgery, so adding fluid just means the pressure builds up, or you are taking too big of a sip. It still hurts me if I accidentally get a gulp rather than a sip.

Try drinking from a little medicine cup for a few days to help you take little sips.

It will get better soon

Exactly -- tiny tiny slow sips.  I'm 4 and a half months out and I still get serious pain if I drink water too fast.

Try warm or Luke warm liquids .  That helped me.  Good luck!

It was a week for me before I could even take a sip without feeling a lump in my esophagus. Sip what you can, take it easy, hang in there.....

It works if you work it; it sorta works if you sorta work it; and it doesn't work if you don't work it.

I never had pain but wasn't testing the waters either. I took tiny sips of whatever I was consuming to the tune of one ounce every 15 minutes. Tiny sips, like barely wetting my lips and tongue. But never had pain even right after I woke up from surgery. I was able to have water right away since my doc only does a leak test in surgery and nothing after.
