As I am getting for my surgery in less than 2 weeks, I started reading about those of you going through the early stages of post-op.

My question is did anyone have GERD or Acid Reflux prior to surgery and what are you finding out has changed if anything? I have to stay away from citrus, tomatoes, caffine, carbonation, and most chocolate now (some is tolerated as long as I am on my meds). Are you finding that you still have to stay away from these things or is it changing?

Just trying to ease my mind as I notice I am getting nervous more about after surgery than the surgery itself.

Thanks.

I had reflux prior to surgery and was on Prilosec.  As long as I stayed on the medication I had no issues with it.  After surgery, my surgeon doubled the dose.  I am still taking two a day and haven't had any discomfort since BEFORE surgery...no matter what I eat.

As for how long after surgery, I will have to keep taking the Prilosec, I don't know.  I will ask at my next followup.  I guess because I have absolutely no issues, I have no problem continuing to take it.

I had it and took omeprazole prior to surgery. The day I left the hospital my surgeon told me to stop taking it. I have and have not had any issues AT ALL!

Hearing that I have the potential of not having the pain afterwards is very comforting. Granted, my body is different and I could be on medicine for the rest of my life, but you know what...as long as it doesn't get worse, that is all I care about!

Mine has stayed exactly the same.. I was hoping that when I lost weight I could wean off my PPI that I've been on for almost a decade. Same small dose though, 10mg generic Prilosec- no issues.

I have had severe GERD for at least 10 years.  Developed an esophageal ulcer because of it and was scoped for esophageal cancer (negative, thank God).  I've been on Prilosec 40 mg every day for years and postop and I have had not one GERD related problem.

Good luck!
