I am preop.  I get IBS with stress really bad.  (nothing to do with when or what I eat)  I was wondering anyone suffer IBS preop?  Did it get worse post op since the stomach is smaller and can't digeste the same as a larger stomach?  i'm worried about this.

Actually, I know this is going to sound crazy.  I had servere IBS before surgery and now I wish i still had it. lol  I go 5-7 days without going.  I used to go 5-7 times a day.  Stool softeners and laxitives have been my best friend since I started eating regular food.  Good luck with everything!!

I wonder if flaxseed would help you with being more regular.  My only worry is if it can be taken as a new post op.  Seeds could get stuck in the stapleline I imagine.  Maybe when your further out you could ask the nutritionist about it.

You can buy flaxseed already ground and that has never bothered me and I have Crohn's Disease.

I have (had?) IBS since I was a kid, and would have a flare a couple times a month. I've had 2 flares (lasting less than an hour!) since surgery..

Weird, but for me- it seems to have fixed it. No more meds, no more cramping and no more emergency runs or even my normal which was 5-6x poo a day (TMI  know, but that was my guts for you, the only thing about me you could call overactive.)

More than anything is that the worst part of my IBS problems is that sometimes poo can get stuck in my abdomin and I can only go part way and I get severely bad crampying until I can go all the way.  I'm scared about this cause once the cramping was so bad I had to go to the hospital.  I didn't even know the problem was IBS cause the cramping was so bad.  The intense pain lasted 4 days.  They gave me every pain med in the book and it was still bad.

Mine was hours in the bathroom with the cold-sweats horrible cramps till I was completely empty. Do they have you on a long-term med for the IBS now?

No cause it just comes with stress.  Not a reaction to food.  Now when I get it.  I massage my abdomin  for about 1/2 hour and it seems to relieve the cramping.  Im usually able to than go.

Mine is mostly stress too- but I can trigger it with certain foods, hormones get me too.
I had some great luck during the worst of it on a low-dose anti-depressant for a while. Believe it or not, serotonin is produced in the gut, and certain meds can help with stress-induced IBS.

In that case losing weight probably helps.  Since ppl would feel more confident it would build up the serotonin naturally.
I take 1 anti aniexty med Lorazapam for aniety/stress.  I have tried different anti depressants but I never reacted to any of them well.  The side effects made me feel more anixious.  I know that sounds crazy.
