Acid reflux
Maybe never. Sometimes a side effect of losing the greater curvature of the stomach is acid reflux.
Are you taking a PPI like Prilosec or Omeprazole? YOu can try adding one on your own. They can take up to 7 days to start working though. IF that works for you you can ask your surgeon or PCP to call you in a prescription(if you have drug coverage).
I was having issues with acid after eating and confusing it with unger. In my mind I was like "Whats going on I can't be hungry, I just ate" and it was really bad sometimes when I was laying down. I take the omeprazole (generic prilosec) and it helpes alot at just over the counter strength.

Very common side effect of VSG. Many surgeons start their patients on a PPI immediately after surgery, even if they never had reflux pre-op. Mine had us dissolve it in water before taking, for the first couple weeks.
I was on OTC Prilosec for a few years before surgery. After surgery I did my surgeon's PPI, didn't do much for me. I went back to my Prilosec, which also didn't do the trick anymore, surprisingly. My own doctor prescribed Dexilant, which worked for a few months, then the reflux came back. Finally she wrote up generic Protonix, which I've taken for over a year now, and it works well. So four PPIs before I found one that works.
Would I do it again? Absolutely. Taking a PPI is a small price to pay for the benefits I've realized from this miracle surgery!

I never had acid reflux before surgery and frankly probably couldn't have told you what it was, before surgery.
Now....I got it. Ever since surgery. I take Prilosec every morning. If I forget, I am reminded after about an hour of waking up.
I tried to wean myself off it but it's just too much. I hate acid reflux. So, I've settled myself in to taking it every morning.
The doctors say to take it 45 minutes before your "main" meal. Which I find funny because with a sleeve they are all the same size meals so which one is the "main". LOL
Morning works best for me. Just be sure to take your calcium supplements because when the Prilosec works it reduces the acid (like it's supposed to) but you need acid to process calcium in your food. So Calcium supplements are extra important while taking the PPI.
good luck,
donna

I am trying hard to wean myself off of Nexium been on it for 6 months & it does wonders but I notice if I take it I tend to eat more and fit more in my sleeve, but when off of Nexium the acid is bearable but makes me feel more full...I know that sounds strange...but it keeps me from eating more often. So I met with my surgeon and he suggested to titrate off PPI and see how it works for me.

I have acid reflux for a few years too. I have been taking omeprazole too - the prescription and over the counter strength are pretty much the same - 20mg. Its no longer holding the reflux at bay so I have doubled the dose (Dr ok'd it). I'm still having some issues at double the dose but not bad. I'm wondering how long before we can actually swallow a pill - tired of opening capsules and putting it in my yogurt.
