When to stop eating?

I'm 1 month post-op. It's 11:20 AM. For breakfast I had a 51Gram Protien Shake 240 calories and then for lunch I had 6 thin peices of turkey (45 calories, 8 protien) and 1 peice of cheese 45 calories & 2 protien.  So total that's 61 Protien & 330 calories. Since I hit my protien goal for the day do I stop eating the rest of the day? or do I continue to eat? My doc said to eat between 600-900 calories per day but compared to many on this board that seems like a lot. It seems double to tripple of what many of you are eating especially this close to surgery. I have been loosing weight very, very slow but then again, my weight is 193 so I guess I'm supposed to lose slower, maybe? Anyways, it's only 11 AM & I already hit goal. So, when do you stop eating? When you hit your protien goal or when you hit calorie goal or what?  How do you know when to stop beyond feeling full?

Wow that is an awesome protein shake! 51g's is amazing! What brand do you use? I never met my protein requirement so soon in the day, so I can't offer any info there. Most of us need 1 to 2 shakes a day to get that.

It's called MET-RX, Protien Plus RTD51.  It is a HUGE can with 240 calories & 51g of protien, 7 carbs.  It takes me a couple of hours to get down but it really takes care of the protien.  I will usually pore into two glasses & divide it up into two servings.

Most of us that were only in the 300-400 range early out, were only in that range due to not being able to get more in due to swelling causing very tight restriction.

For instance, my plan was 800 cals a day till goal, I routinely ate 600-800/day. I wa****ting 500-600 10 days out of surgery, due to being able to drink freely of protein shakes.. I didn't have any issues with restriction of liquids or pureed foods.. only dense protein/thick stuff. My protein goal was at least 70g a day, 60 seems rather low? Unless you are a very very petite woman, I'd try to get closer to 70 at the minimum.. and by all means, if you can hit 600/day, do it! I stop when I hit my calorie goals, and planned it out so my proteins were always at or above my daily target.

As your diet plan allows, you may want to start getting more of your protein from food, and not the shake.  Maybe cut your protein shake in half and eat more food with protein in it. That way you are getting your calories and your protein.  If you aren't eating enough, it can slow your weight loss.

I think I read on here somewheres that our bodies can only take in 30 g of protein within a certain amount of time, like every 3-4 hrs or something like that. Sorry I can't provide you the details on this, just what I have read on here. It is ok to go over your daily amount of protein just keep within the amount of calories per day. Some of the vets say to stay close to 600 during the losing stage, it does get harder as you get further out with me being closer to 800 then 600. There are some days if I only drink one protein shake that I am around 600.

My doc and NUT have always told me to get my 60-80g protein in with my shakes and what protein I eat a meal time is a plus...protein helps our bodies with so much in so many ways...helps weight loss, helps regrowth of muscles, hairs, etc.

You definately need to stick to what your NUT and Doctor say.  Everyones plan is different and everyones health conditions are known only by them and their medical team.

As some said I would definately look at getting a protein drink with less calores, there's some good ones that have only 140-160 calories.

On my plan a month out I was still on mushy phase, 6 weeks was when I transitioned to solid food.

I don't agree with the light weight thing, I think its a very personal thing in regards to how quickly you will lose.

Just because you hit your protein goal does not mean you shouldn't eat:)  If you take away your protein calories you can easily keep your calories low.

Good luck, please don't starve your body to fit the goals of folks on here!
