balancing and alcohol...
I will be 8 weeks out on Thursday: I have just been cleared for soft foods to transition to regular diet. I am a bit confused though on how to balance out the food groups for my meals. Right now, I only eat 1 thing at a time. I always eat 2.5 oz. How do you get meat and veggies at one meal? 2 oz. of meat and 1 oz of veggies? Please help! Also, I asked the dietician how long to wait until I can have A drink. I don't mean like this weekend or anything, but like Thanksgiving...can I have A small glass of wine? She said that even a sip can send a person to the E.R. I thought I had read on here of people having a drink. I know that beer has carbonation and that isn't a good choice, but I do like A glass of wine of holidays. (I keep capitalizing "A" to stress the fact that I do not feel a need to get plastered, or hinder my weightloss) Thanks in advance for responding!
example of my daily intake:
breakfast: adkins advantage shake
snack: 2.5 oz of greek yogurt
lunch:2.5 oz refried beans
snack: 2.5 oz of greek yogurt
supper: 2.5 oz of tuna
snack: 1 laughing cow cheese wedge
and of course plenty of water and crystal light.

On the food, I still don't eat much veggie stuff, unless I eat it as a snack. I can only fit about 2.25-2.5oz meat in at a time, and anymore would be pushing it to past comfort. Since protein is #1, I eat it first, and rarely have any room leftover for more than a bite of veggies. So, I'm a carnivore, who occasionally eats some low-carb veggies as a snack.
On the alcohol, methinks your NUT was using a little hyperbole (or she's just crazy, some seem to be.) You will not go to the ER on a sip, or even a small glass of wine.. but, that said, I would wait a couple more months before testing the waters on that one. I had a SIP of nice red wine about 8-9 weeks out, and it burned a bit when it hit my stomach. Not pleasant at all. I waited a couple more months to have a glass. I occasionally have a drink or two- I save it for social events, and I have a very much lower tolerance now because #1- I don't drink often anymore and #2- much lower body weight, so when you do have it- go very slow. You will likely find yourself in the same boat.

For the first many months, all I ate was protein. It's all I had room for. You'll be able to eat a more varied diet when you get further out. Don't sweat it for now - but be sure you take your vitamins and supplements!
On alcohol, no, it won't kill you. I'd wait a minimum of 6 months before even a sip, but that's your decision. But be warned, alcohol will affect your metabolism for days after you drink. So if you're a "gotta check my scale every day" kinda person, you may want to stay off of the scale for awhile after alcohol.

I would say have a few sips of wine when you are ready. I had vsg 10/3 of last year and the first sip I took of wine was in late january. And I say sip. I just had a sip or two and actually was very satisfied with that. A month ago I was out and on an empty stomach had 3 good gulps of wine and got that warm fuzzy feeling! It was a quick little buzz, I laughed about it and it left shortly thereafter. I never was a big drinker, I really like wine, but now a sip or two and I am very satisfied.
If I were you I would give it a little bit longer to make sure your tummy is healed and you are doing well. Good luck and congrats to you!
