how was your hospital stay?

I also had a very positive experience in the hospital.  The hospital where I had my surgery done is a certified bariatric center of excellence and all of the staff on the bariatric floor are certified and experienced caring for bariatric patients.  One nurse was kind of stressed out but I think she was just having a bad day.  The main nurse I saw was a sweetheart.  For the first 24 hours, any time I wanted to sit in the chair or go for a walk, he had to come in and remove the compression leg wraps or go with me to wal****il they removed the catheter, etc.  I felt like I was extra work, but he assured me that wasn't the case.

Because I have type II diabetes, they had to stick me every hour until they got three readings in a row that were under a certain number and then they could go with every two hours.  The nurses tried to synchronize the vital sign checks with when they stuck me so that they cut back on the number of times they had to wake me up.

I had no trouble sleeping, thank goodness.  I'm sure the pain meds helped!

I had my surgery done at Auburn Regional in Auburn, Wa. I was really happy with the care. They do so many bariatric surgeries there they know exactly how to deal with everything. I only had to stay overnight but they made sure was able to take a shower, get up when I wanted and let me go to the bathroom alone like a grownup (which I appreciated). My husband stayed with me and they made sure to have a room with an extra sleeping chair for him. I mostly slept. I had brought a book to read but I was too tired. The only thing I did was text a few friends and watch tv.  I didn't use any pain meds other than Tylenol. I was given fluids through an IV and they started me on sipping water and protein shakes as soon as possible. I was up walking as soon as I sobered up a bit, only a few steps at first but they say it helps with the anesthesia. I was severly nauseated after I had the surgery, that is probably my only complaint. But the staff did what they could to ease that. On the morning I left the hospital they had two different people who worked on staff and had had bariatric surgery come in and speak to me and let me know what to expect. It was kinda nice talking with someone who had gone through exactly what I had. The doctor came and saw me in the morning, checked the incisions, told me everything went well and said I could go home.
And glad you're back on the wagon. just about everyone slips up I think. When I was on fluids for the weeks before surgery i had a moment of panic and ate a bunch of fudge. I had never been so sick in my life lol

My hospital stay was great (as great as being in a hospital can be) ! I had good pain control and the nurses were always checking on me and seeing if I needed anything. I don't think I slept much, really can't remember though....lol  I stayed about 1.5 days and by day 2  I had stopped taking pain meds and wanted the hell out of there......was BORED out of my mind! I think one of the keys to my great experience was having a private room, my surgeons office made sure I had that. Walking the hallways was a hoot in those lovely gowns.....lol  All while dragging along your IV pump and fluids. All and all, a lot better then I anticipated!

I could not have had a better bunch of nurses taking care of me at the hospital.

Honestly! From the first nurse I encountered who got my vitals and prepped for the surgery, to the nurse in recovery who I only faintly remember, to the nurses who took care of me on the floor. Every single one of them was sweet, attentive, and helpful. I truly lucked out. I keep meaning to send a little note to the hospital. Every little pat on the back counts. I'm not a nurse but I work in health care and it's nice to get good feedback! :)

My surgery was on a Thursday and I didn't get into my room until 6pm because they didn't have a room available yet. Once in there I got a cup of water with a sponge to try and help with my dry mouth....that thing was aaaamazing at the time! I slept until 1am or so and they came in, got my vitals and got me up to walk. I did pretty good and was lucky to not have any gas pains at all. Went back to sleep for the night and woke up Friday morning feeling like a million bucks. Minimal pain, slightly sore but overall pretty good. I laid around, searched the web on my tablet, and slept.

I saw my surgeon around noon on Friday and he said I was good to go home. He said he had never seen a patient look and feel so good right after. I spent a few more hours there and the nurses had me up and walking around. I was glad to go home but sad to leave all the wonderful ladies of the floor.

I hope that your stay is as easy and drama free as mine was. As others have said, Thank you goes a long way! Be nice to them and they will be nice to you! :)
