Did your doc give you a prescription for an iron pill or are you taking over the counter? I have Sickle Cell SC Disease so my iron is always low. I take a prescription pill Taron Forte. I don't know if an over the counter will get your where you need to be in time for surgery. Maybe one of the vets will chime in.

You might already know this..but..

Take that iron pill 2 hours (on either side) away from

whole eggs, nuts, calcium, any dairy products, whole grains, coffee/teas **and BEANS.  Take it WITH something high in vitamin C, or even with a chewable vitamin (that does not have any of the above in it) and this will help you because all of those things fight in our body for the iron receptors, and those things will win and you will have been taking all your iron for naught.

Also be sure and take vitamin B12, because some anemias are caused by/affected by low B12 levels.

Welcome to the part of the journey where you realize the people in charge of your medical care do not always tell you everything you might need to know, and that they might not even know that part themselves.

I have had doctor's drop balls on stuff so much since is started with this journey (and charting my own labs, and learning about vitamin supplements we need) that it is not even almost funny.

Do you have your lab numbers?  What is low?  Your hemoglobin and hematocrit, or those AND your ferritin?  Those are good things to know too.

Your H&H are like checks out in the system, your ferritin is like your checking account.  Your checking account (ferritin) can be high and you can not have a lot of checks in the system (and you might could use an elemental iron for that, a ferrous sulfate kind of iron), you can also have a lot of checks out in the system (so it LOOKS like you do not have an issue) but you can have way low checking account - and sooner or later, that's going to run you dry - but you will not know if they do not check the ferritin.

Low ferritin usually needs to be brought up with a heme-iron or infusions.

Welcome to anemia bloodwork 101.  :}  But wait...there's more.  :}

Now is the time to read labels, girlie.  If it has calcium (if its not a one a day for over 50) then do not do it.

Brandilyn, didn't know about the eggs and whole grains. VERY GOOD TO KNOW! Thanks. I've been really careful about the calcium and dairy, but the others..... damn, if it isn't always something else to learn along this journey! ;-)
