Aside from asking the surgeon directly, which i have done, how do you find out a surgeon's complication and mortality rate??

My surgeon said he had to report everything through Blue Cross (because they are very strict).  Look for something maybe through them about that surgeon?

I heard that some doctors in ambulatory surgical centers (the alternative to a hospital) brush off signs of complications to avoid reporting them, to keep their numbers low. Some food for thought.

Watch for very subtle things.  Does their follow up support group have a lot of post op people in it and are they willing to talk?   On the various appointments for endoscopy etc ask the Doctors and especally the nurses if they see many patients with complications from that Doctor.  If there are complications that is where they will probably end up: at the gut Doctor.  If they are super thorough about pre-surgury tests such as endoscopy the better chances you have of avoiding problems.  If the Doctors and Nurses seem evasive there may be something to it.  If you have a strong intuition you should probably use it.

I got a grade A referal to the Doctor I am with now and it has proved to be true.  All of the other Doctors and professionals have a lot of respect for him.  His office is very helpful and kind.  A good vibe all the way around.   I checked out another Doctor got a very bad reference AND a bad vibe.
