Egg white proteins take about 3 hours to digest. I couldn't find anything (so far) on how long the protein from egg whites stays in the system. So it seems that egg white protein is pretty similar to casein protein in the way and length of time it digests. Again that would suggest you would want a quicker acting protein during the day with a longer acting one such as egg white protein later in the evening when it would have more time to digest. They are great however if you are lactose intolerant.

The only thing I want to add is the protein absorption occurs in the intestines. The stomach doesn't "absorb" much of anything, it's mechanical feature is to mush down the food, break it down for better absorption in the intestines.

This is about RNY pouches etc, but it explains macro nutrient absorption in a clear manner:

And, I never used shakes regularly, I am whey and lactose intolerant, soy proteins are repulsive, and I was no worse for the wear without shakes. I started getting all of my protein from food sources once I hit mushy/soft foods.

Our bodies will use the protein we eat/drink. We aren't using protein for body building. It's simply for recovery, and to protect our organs during the recovery period. A lot of surgeons only prescribe shakes to be used until food can be the primary source of protein. Some, like Brandilynn, have to have shakes because her protein levels stay low. Then there's others, like me, who have zero issue consuming enough lean, dense protein to meet daily recommendation plus some.

And on page S93, the ASMBS addresses protein intake and absorption for malabsorptive and restrictive only procedures: This is a very long, medical read, but it's chalked full of invaluable information on micro macro nutrients, supplementation, the "whys" behind so many of the "rules" bariatric surgery.
