Am I Too Old To Do This?

wow. You've answered already.  Thank you so much!!!  You are helping me more than you can ever imagine.

What I want is to be able to walk down the street without using a cane because the weight is making the arthritis in my leg hurt so much.   I want to be able to take photographs by resting on  my stomach in the grass and then be able to get up!   I want to play with my grandchildren sitting on the floor, becuase my grandson is always asking me to do this and I can't.

I want to feel alive again!   I want to fit into clothes better.  And most importantly to me, I want to be healthy again and live at least well into my 80's ...something that most assuredly will not happen in the condition I am.     I have tried so many diets, like everyone else here, and I am just so done with it all.  I need a lifestyle change and I belive the sleeve is the tool that will help me  be a success.

Thank you all for your messages.

Linda

I had surgery almost 5 weeks ago and I'm 61. Like you, arthritis was affecting my ability to walk even though I've taken Voltarem for years.

I have to quit the Voltaren two weeks before surgery since its an NSAID so I went to Tylenol Arthritis. After surgery I had to crush my pills so the Ty Arth was out since its time released and you can't crush those. I moved to regular Tylenol but discovered that I only needed 2 in the morning and 2 at night.

One morning I forgot to take my Tylenol and I didn't hurt ---- hmmmm.... I've had osteoarthritis all over my body for at least 15 years. How could it be that after losing only 12 pounds I didn't hurt, even when it rained?!?

I decided to not take it at night either.....haven't taken any in over a week. Still don't have any pain or discomfort from OA. I can't explain it, but hope you also have good results from the surgery.

Oh I am really getting excited after reading the posts from all of you!

I too have been taking either Tramadol or Voltaren for quite sometime. When it gets really bad, I use Vicodin. I've been getting cortizone shots in my knee every 3 months for a year. I had surgery on that knee last year and had my meniscus removed . I had broken a bone in the knee too....or actually, my bone had wasted away.

That is WONDERFUL that with just 12 lbs your knee is feeling better!  Can you imagine what it will be like in another 12 lbs, then another?    Yay!

Thanks for your posting and I hope that your knee continues to feel great!

Hi!  I guess I'm the senior of the bunch!  I'm almost 66 yrs old.  I was sleeved last Monday, Feb 6th.  I have a congenitial heart defect and was afraid my drs. wouldn't approve me.   But, they were very happy to approve me.  They all thought I'd be a "good canidate for WLS".

Each day, I'm feeling better.  I'll be glad to get the JP tube out on Monday.  I think the excess skin is the biggest worry!  I have 60+ lbs to lose.  I can't imagine what I'll look like!

Good luck!

I'm not quite 50 but down almost 150 lbs (my avatar is about 25 lbs ago). I have loose skin all over - none of it horrible, but pretty much everywhere.

I look fabulous in clothes. I will never wear a bikini and will still probably wear Bermuda shorts and short sleeves rather than tank tops. BUT: I wore those things before so no loss. I never, never looked fabulous in clothes before.

And I feel great.

You will NOT look worse with loose skin than you do now. Honest. Fat is not pretty, it's lumpy. At least loose skin you can hide in stylish clothes, there's no hiding the fat.

Highest weight: 335 lbs, BMI 50.9
Pre-op weight: 319 lbs, BMI 48.5
Current range: 140-144, BMI 21.3 - 22

175+ lbs lost, maintaining since February 2012

I am 53, heading to the VSG surgery on Monday, the day before my 54th birthday.

I am joining the chorus of the "go for its".

I've also thought about the skin issues and the wrinkles and have warned my husband that my youthful appearance will undoubtedly morph into something more appropriate for my age.

So.....I can remain obese and younger looking while I gradually lose my mobility and become more miserable, or I can take this wonderful opportunity to remake myself. If I follow the rules, I know I'll lose ALOT of weight. So what's worse? Being obese and sedentary, or having some flabby skin and wrinkles and being able to jog??

I'm not trying to minimize your concerns, which are normal, and I'm sure many go through the same thought process. You have pain and mobility issues as well, but you will be successful in achieving major weight loss with this surgery. Then you will have less pain and more mobility.

And it isn't the end of the road -- there are plastics, if you are interested, and there are facial muscle exercises and there are alot of great skin regimens out there to control or minimize the wrinkles.

Just imagine where you will be one year from now if you don't choose the surgery. Will you be looking back and wishing you had done something? Or will you be congratulating yourself for making a good decision and improving your lifestyle 1000%?

Hi Linda,
I am 63 years old and already have eyelids that sag.  After this surgery I will
not only have eyelids that sag, but I will probably have boobs down to my knees,
saddlebags, bat wings, and an apron of excess skin. LOL  That doesn't scare me away.
I am hoping if I need to have some of that removed that my husband will let
me get it done.  I really want to improve my appearance as well as my health.  My
joints are screaming for relief.  I am still waiting for my surgery date, and my
primary care physician is the one *****commended I get it done.  I take it a day at
a time.

Thanks, Barbara. I have some sagging already too , I guess there is no way getting around it at 59.  But inside, I don't FEEL 59 and that is where the disconnect is at times.... I don't want to look my age I think. :)

After 2 near death experiences you'd think I'd have been able to do it by myself, but I simply can't. I've changed everything in my life eating, exercising,etc...but the weight remains.   I need help and i believe this is going to be good for me.

My sons don't agree, and I can understand that too.   But I'm not really doing this for anyone else but me.  For me... for once I'm going to do something entirely for me.  And I don't want to mess it up.
