Weight Loss During "Medically Supervised..." Pre Op
I'm hoping for some insight into what insurance companies actually expect during your 6 month, or 3 month "medically supervised weightloss" time period. I've been going to my visits monthly, weighing in as scheduled. I've lost a couple of pounds, but not much. I was wondering, what kind of weight loss did you all have?
Thanks!
Thanks!
i had to do a 12 week program - the point was to lose weight, and they set our expectation at 10%. I lost way more than at - at 85 lbs (but took me 10 months) since I had a long wait after the program was over.
I am a strong advocate of losing as much weight as possible before surgery, and working on changing your eating habits before you undergo a major life changing surgery. For me, it really helped reduce the shock of surgery.

I had BCBS Illinois and gained 35+ pounds during my 6 months of supervised diet. I was so scared I would be denied. I even called the insurance company and asked and they said that I didn't have to lose, I just had to have the 6 months of weight loss "attempts". I totally freaked out the last few months before surgery and ate untill I couldn't eat no more. I hit every fast food restaurant every day. It was stupid, but I guess I got it out of my system.
Wow! That is quite the range of answers already! My insurance does not specifiy a percentage or amount. I have actually tried to lose weight, but haven't been very successful (thus the need for a more proactive approach...) Here's what my insurance company says word for word:
I think I'm okay. :)
documentation of failure to lower the body mass index by a medically supervised program within the last twelve months of diet and exercise of at least six months duration |
