Do you agree or disagree?? 200+ pound 8 year old sent to foster care
"We're already doing gastric bypass operations on adults. The funny thing is that in order to be considered eligible, you have to lose a certain percentage of your current body weight through diet and exercise alone to show that you're committed. My view is, if you're capable of losing that required percentage through diet and exercise pre-operatively, goes to show that it can be done, you're just lazy and undisciplined. I'm waiting for the day when they actually bring in a kid to be evaluated for the operation because I know it's coming. I just hope I'm out of the country before that happens in my office!"
Nice, eh?
I think it's a very sad situation. I'm not sure there's a 'right' move.
I don't believe that obesity is a 'disease' in the sense that it's inevitable, particularly childhood obesity. There are parenting and lifestyle choices that can and do make all the difference in the world. How many parents park their kids in front of theTV or computer while they themselves are parked in front of a TV or computer rather than interacting as a family? How many choose relatively expensive, pre-packaged foods for convenience rather than cooking fresh food and controlling additives and portions?
I don't have kids. I'm certainly not an expert, but I do see a difference in how I was raised eating balanced, home cooked meals (my mother worked, and I started doing a lot of cooking in middle school), and how parents I know are raising their kids today.
