PLEASE! If you are 'open about your surgery'

Of course, for those who it does not work for, who have complications, their stories are also valid. BUT I feel like there is an inordinately high percentage of negative stories out there.

When I told people, I heard 3-4 horror stories. No one knew someone who was a success. Those are terrible percentages!!!

Thankfully my friend was a successful RNYer and gave me the down low.

So if they say less than 1% get a leak, why do you hear all leak stories and no success stories? For every 1 leak there are at least 100 non leaks.

 You know what I mean.

Your statement is right though, there are some who it doesnt work for.

100% agree. I think everyone knows about my surgery and I'm happy to share any details they want to know.....within reason.  Strangely, I never got one of those 'bad" stories/comments as a pre op. (I think everyone was afraid I wouldn't have WLS).  They all know they can refer some to me for questions.  I guess, it's one reason I still go to support meetings. We have a very small group and the pre ops really pick my (and others) brain.

Just a quick story---
Pre surgery I spent allot of time at GNC and purchased a ton of those damn protein shots. The manager was really helpful.  Of course didn't use them after I read about them here but it was too late to return them. Relayed the info to the GNC manager and why.  Well that same GNC guy told me on my recent visit (18 mons later) that he had just worked with another WLS client and dissuaded her from purchasing the shots...got her on another product.    It felt good!

Hope you get this reply---I picked up messages really late

Here's 2 great posts that explain why we don't want those protein shots. It boils down to collagen protein ----not well absorbed by us.

People never cease to amaze me. All I can say is that this is the best thing I have ever done, and with the results I am getting after surgery I tell everyone who asks about my journey. It is a tool I choose to get and it is working for me so why not share. it is the best way to dispel all the negative things that are spread by rumor and out and out lies.

I have a housemate that will not even think about losing weight or having the surgery. He is still addicted to the trash food and will not try new foods or eat vegetables. I know at some point his weight is going to kill him, slowly, and there is nothing that I or my other housemates can do to change his mind. Oh well I can only hope that he see how well I am doing and maybe make the change.

As of now I have lost 89 lbs since I started my journey and needing only 11 more lbs to hit the 100lbs lost mark. I also had to buy new clothes this weekend and boy did the price sing, I did not mind the buying of the new stuff, I think it was the buying of new stuff that will not fit me at Christmas that stung the most. But then I think I can always donate it and get it to someone who needs it.

I have been very open about my surgeries. Everyone knew about lap-band and the revision to sleeve. It makes me more accountable. Even though I am a slow loser.....I am losing. I love my sleeve!

I agree with edelu.

From a compliance standpoint, you can strive to be a role model.

But if you get an infection or the surgery results in strictures or for some reason the surgery doesn't result in much weight loss, you should be able to be honest about it to those around you and get support from other VSGers.

Pretending that the surgery is perfect or failsafe or idiot proof does no favors to others who might consider the surgery.

Sassy - I am with you...100% open and willing to share my story when approached (and I have definitely been approached).  I feel it's my duty to "pay my good fortune forward".

Unfortunately human nature is such that we talk more when our experiences are bad then good.  There's an old customer service note that says something to the effect that for every good expereince we have we share with 1-2 people, for every bad experience we have we share with 4-5 people.

VSG is a true blessing for me and if I am given the opportunity I will always share my story and this website with folks who ask me what I did.
