This is odd but it works for me

I have been having a lot of trouble with the foamies, at least 15 times in the 6 weeks or so since my VSG. I know that most foamies occur when you overeat or eat too quickly.  I don't believe I have ever overfilled my sleeve to cause this problem.  I simply cannot get enough food down to do that. The valve at the top of my stomach seems to just close and that's when the trouble starts. But I tried something that seems to work and I have been able to get much more food into my sleeve. Going forward, I may be able to get a "read" on what my sleeve will tolerate so that I can always undereat my sleeve capacity. Here is the trick. I drink Diet Coke with my meal!  I think it could be any carbonated drink, but that's my fav. So, after I have had a couple of very small mouthfuls of food (slowly!), I take a tiny sip of the Diet Coke. It makes me burp and seems to keep the valve "awake". It's probably got something to do with the pressure differential between the upper and lower stomach valves which is important to the swallowing function and keeps food in the stomach instead of leaking back into the esophagus.  My weight loss has been satisfying, but eating has been a real problem for me.  I'm very aware that I should not eat and drink at the same time and that carbonated drinks should be avoided. But this little cheat seems to be working and for the first time I'm starting to love my sleeve. Cheers!

I can only imagine how many are reading this and shaking their head in disbelief as I am. Did it ever occur to you to just not eat enough to cause the foamies? Why on earth would you do something so self destructive as having diet coke? This has the great potential to undo all the benefits of the sleeve. Please reconsider your actions for your own sake.
Take care

I got the foamies from 1/3 of a scrambled egg on an empty stomach last week (week 6).  How much less can I eat?  When I am done with a meal there is still 90% of the Diet Coke left.  My consumption is about an ounce taken in about 15 sips.  I will be getting scoped to see if there is a physical problem, but here in Ontario only God knows how long that will take.  In the meantime this seems to work.  I don't intend for the general population of OH members to start drinking Diet Coke.  But I have to say that for those who are having a problem swallowing, and you are getting desperate, burping may help.  Cheers!

If Aceves was your doctor he likely did a tight 32F....I'm pretty certain that is his normal standard from what I have read.

If that is the case and your surgery was only six weeks ago....then YES....you might overeating by only eating 1/3 of an egg at this point.  Your stomach is EXTREMELY small and tight and still healing.

The symptoms you are describing are classic reflux caused by either eating too fast or too much acid.  Are you taking a PPI?

Good luck, but personally I would lay off the Diet Soda six weeks after surgery.

I'm almost 3 months out and still can't eat more than 1/2 a scrambled egg. A lot of sleevers have issues with scrambled eggs months and months and months out. How much cottage cheese can you eat? (w/out the diet coke)?

Do whatever works for you. Unless someone has had the problems you described then they really don't know why your remedy works.  I drink diet mountain dew 6 onces a day with no problems and my weight loss is fine.  So good luck with your sleeve and I am glad you are enjoying your sleeve now. As long as your not over eating who cares.

prilosec works for me....give it a try and see if it helps!! I am not going to nag you but please try to stay away from any carbonated drinks and beer...I spent a fortune on my daughters gastric bypass and 5 years later (after cokes and beer) she has gained most of her weight back....
