you had a what?
Well my Dr moved apparently while I was on leave for my VSG so I had to go see the new dr in his place to get a note to return to work. This Dr might only be temporary and I have to wait to see what is going on.
Dr. What surgery did you have?
Me: A vertical Sleeve gastrectomy
Dr. a what?
Me: I just need a note to go back to work
I bet you he will be running to the computer tonight to see what it is.
My last Dr knew about this and told me he would follow up my care, I think I might call around and see if there are any Drs in the city that know what a VSG is that is taking on new patients. It is different here, most Drs here will not accept new patients, their practices are to the maximum and it is our job to find one. Anyways, I think I might have some fun with this Dr to see if he knows any more next time I go to him lol.

It certainly is funny to know something that the doctor doesn't know. When I inquired about WLS with my doctor, he knew what the gastric bypass was, but looked confused when I mentioned the sleeve. He never had a patient have this surgery before, and didn't even know how to go about applying for it.
In the end, I decided to not apply and opted to self pay out of country, since I already knew I would be denied for the sleeve under our stict OHIP rules. He will be even more stunned once I tell him next week. Just hope he able to provide the after care that I will need. Doctors are almost impossible to find, and would hate to give him up.

The easiest way for me to avoid any confusion with many doctors is to drop the words vertical sleeve, and just say "partial gastrectomy". That is an extremely well-known surgery, if they need true details, then I just say "VSG" is the acronym if you're interested in researching it.
That's so much easier than trying to sit there and explain the "vertical sleeve" part of it.

Hehe I was just being a smart ass, probably have a different dr. the next time I go in, play the game again if I have to. I had my xrays with me and everything but basically just needed my note to go back to work with the lifting restrictions on it and get my baby checked out, fast appt to get in this week so didn't want to take too much time since my baby had a really not so pleasant bm and was stinking up the office. I just cleaned a dirty diaper of his like ten mins before the appt and didn't bring more lol, only a two min drive. Baby has to be referred for continous stys on his eyes so hopefully they will get him in fast to get them cleared up. Tried the gold rings and polysporin eye ointments but nothing is working. This has been going on for about a year and he is saying they hurt.
When anyone asks me what a VSG is; I simply say they remove 80-85% of my stomach and I have hot dog size stomach now. It is a permanent surgery. That seems to help everyone understand. Then if they want more information, I am willing to tell them everything I know about it vs the other surgeries.

When I was in the ER a week after surgery, the ER doc asked what surgery I had (how do they not pull up basic medical records these days!?)
I said - a sleeve gastrectomy, just laziness on my part.
He says - "vertical?"
I was thinking - no, horizontal. So I said yes. But I still laugh. I mean, is there something about it being a vertical sleeve gastrectomy that makes it different from some other sleeve procedure?
Lesson learned - either use the right medical term or dumb it down a lot more
