Eating protein burns calories? Wow!

Dr. Oz was just explaining this interesting fact:

Your body burns TWICE as many calories working to digest protein versus working to digest carbohydrates.

Us VSG'ers must be burning tons of calories in the tummy with all the dense protein we eat!

Interesting tidbit

I did see this on Dr. Oz and I've read it several times.  I've also read that we should eat protein within 30 minutes of waking up to jump start our metabolism, the body has to work harder to burn protein.

Oh I hope this is the truth, today I started mushies (3 weeks post op) and was nervous that I might slow down my weight loss at this stage of real food. Yes of course I can understand the fluids just run through us but we still absorb the calories from the protein drinks etc...

Can you shed any light on this

Just FYI-

most people lose the most amount of weight the first month. its just how it works. you may lose slower in subsequent months, dont freak out! its ok and normal. just follow your docs plan, measure your food, dont over do it, eat protein at every meal because you are eating so little it must be protein to sustain your bodys basic life processes.

i think the problem comes in when people are cleared for mushies or solids they add in a whole bunch of junk, carbs, potatoes, crackes, candy, cookies. Eat your protein and you will be ok. you may not lose 25 lbs every month, it may be more like 10. and that will get you to goal.

I am just sticking to protein for my mushie stage basically minus the mayo I put on my tuna so far I just had an egg for breakfast and tuna for lunch, very satisfied and just waiting for my 1 hr post lunch so I can drink drink drink some more.

I just trying to make the best of my first 6 months and hoping for a big loss at the end. I am going to start an exercise program at home that I brought off of a tv program that swears the results are good lol when I am cleared and over the winter I think I will learn to run again at my sister's on her treadmill. I don't think I can afford a gym this winter but will see after xmas is over and done with.

Hi Sassy,

I have a question for you, do you still drink protein shakes or are you getting your protein from the food you eat?  Or do you supplement in any other way?  Curious how it is down the road.

Thanks for the post very interesting

I have a shake every morning, its actually a nice treat, kind of in place of a morningly starbucks. it has become a habit and healthy, yummy one. It gives me 15g protein and a ton of vitamins first thing in the morning. The rest of the protein i get in my day (probably 75g total in a day) is from meat and some cheese.

This shake is amazing and definitely a good habit for me. I wouldnt recommend this for those newly sleeved, maybe those closer to goal as my shake has caffeine (which can dehydrate you!) and carbs in it. But since I was about 5-6 months out I have been drinking a Click protein shake, both in the vanilla latte and mocha flavors.

It has caffeine so its a wake-me- up. I mix 1 scoop with 8oz milk and some ice, mix for 10 seconds in my Bullet,  and pour it into a pretty cup so it really feels like a treat.

Love it!
