Hairloss after VSG, there is a light at the end of the tunnel
I know alot of people ask about how they can reduce hairloss after VSG..
Truthfully, I can't give you the magic answer. I have seen and read so many theories about it from the shock of anesthesia causing it, to reducing loss by adding protein, vitamins, omega 3's, biotin, yada yada yada.
What I can tell you is that I did lose alot of hair post-op. I was hoping I wouldnt. I have a ton of thick, long hair and I was dreading parting with my mop. Despite taking my multi-vite and getting my protein, the hairloss started around 5 months out. At first it seemed like increased shedding. Soon, after every shampoo and hair combing sessions I would have a pile of hair that had fallen out. I never went bald, it was never noticable to anyone but me.
So, I accepted that it was happening and knew it would stop. I kept taking my multi and protein. And it finally stopped, around 8.5 months out. Without any miracle shampoos, creams, treatments, overdosing on biotin, etc.
So the point is: You may lose hair, it will suck, but it eventually stops. Its not the end of the world. And if we are going to lose hair at least we are comforted by still losing weight.
I'll accept the temporary hairloss as a consequence of losing all that weight. Anyday!

LOL Don!!!!!
I speak at our infomational meetings along with some other WLS folks. One of them is a guy who had RnY and bics his head by choice. When the question of hair loss comes up, and it always does,we always get a serious look on our faces and point to Rob and say "Do we need to say more??"
It's always good for a room full of laughs!

Thanks for this update! I am losing hair like crazy now. It started as extra shedding and went to full blown losing-hair-like-mad. I hope it doesn't become noticeable... I figure I have two more months of hair loss ahead of me yet, based on the 3-month average loss time period reported here.
Ugh.
Ugh.

Yup, I lost for about 8 months. Far worse this time out than with the lap band but that could be because I had hernia surgery about 5 months in too. Plus I lost more weight and faster. I started with shoulder length hair and ended up with a pixie cut to try to hide all the thinning. Now I'm ready to grow my hair out again. I have so much short springy regrowth my short haircut now looks like a hair hat. Really felt uncomfortable with such short hair. It was cute in a way and really easy but I didn't feel feminine. And with all my new neck and face wrinkles it made me feel old. Happy to see it start heading towards my shoulders again even if I have to live through all the awkward regrowth.
Sure hope I don't start losing it all again as I start on plastic surgery.
