What's the verdict on spicy foods?
VSG on 02/16/12
I plan on getting the VSG (hopefully soon). I love Indian, Mexican, Thai, and Chinese food - the hotter the better. Has anyone experienced problems with eating spicy foods?
I haven't found a food yet that I can't tolerate......
That said..... I'd go bland for about 3 months....make sure your really healed....
Something about raunchy fermented Kim Chee sittin in my new tummy doesn't sound right !!!!
Than start adding them in a stepped up fashion from mild to wild....testing your tolerances. Some people do end up having issues with certain foods post-op that they didn't have pre-op.
What you don't want is to find an intolerance at a social function or someplace out of your comfort zone.
I regularly eat all the foods that you mentioned plus Korean and Peruvian.....

Thanks for asking this question! I was just talking about this today with my friends...they were asking me if I had decided for sure on surgery and we were talking about this because I LOVE thai, indian, vietnamese, etc as well!
Hopefully, if i do have the surgery, I will not have to give these up completely...although, ultimately, I know i'm not ready for surgery until I know i am fine with giving up whichever food is holding me down (at least until my head is able to control myself).

I just ate a ghost pepper the other day at work on a dare. It burnt like battery acid (it is the third hottest pepper in the world) BUT, I made it. I didn't swallow it because I was afraid for the tummy; but a little juice got into it anyway. I could definitely tell where my pouch was afterwards until the burn went away. I never got heartburn or anything from it so I think ordinary spicy foods would be okay.
being of Indian origin, i gotta cook it at home All the time and with lots of spice... i personally being used to it never had an issue from the start (added masalas & chilis to broth in the early stage itself).. tho my body's used to this & very tolerant to hot & spicy! i'd say to each their own based on their palette & tolerance
good luck!
good luck!
Good to see you back! I had a rxny not a vsg but spicy foods are something I tolerate better now then before. My surgeon told me the surgery would take care of my heartburn and after years of feeling like I was on fire it is gone. And I love spicy food! Plus I think my taste buds have changed with the decrease in sugar so everything tastes better. Of course that could be from giving up my 20 year smoking habit too. It is all bonus. I hope u get your surgery soon!
