It's not uncommon to have a hiatal hernia repair in connection with a VSG.  I did, and it seems like maybe 10% to 20% of people who post here have that occur.  Typically, it doesn't make the recovery longer.  Your body has bigger things to worry about (like "where's the rest of my stomach").

I had it, didn't seem to make much difference for me, but then I can't really say since it is tough to compare my own recovery to others.

My surgeon aggressively seeks out and repairs hiatal hernias during his surgeries.  He says that nearly all MO patients have them, but most surgeons don't fix them.  About 85% of his patients have a repair at the time of WLS (compared to 10-20% of all WLS patients), and from the patients of his that I know, it seems their recoveries were comparable to what I read about here on OH.

I already know I have a small hiatal hernia that is going to be fixed, so I *hope* the recovery isn't worse, but even if it is, I'll take it because I don't want that hernia hanging around causing problems for me down the road.

Thanks, I'm glad they fixed mine too, it seemed like my recovery was a little slower but maybe not, I'm still having problems taking a deep breath to fill my lungs, I exercise them every 2 hrs, but its not getting better, don't know if its a side effect of the anesthesia or what......., guess time will heal. Thanks again. (Im only 5 days out.)

Yep, and nope. I had one (surprise! but kinda not), he fixed it, and my overall recovery was super-smooth and quick.  The fact that I've had no heartburn or reflux since then makes the surgery worth it almost for that alone!

I did, but I don't think it made my recovery any longer, just made my restirctions a little tighter at the start (lifting etc).
