VSG in Mexico

Hi OH Family...just wandering how many of you have had your VSG in Mexico? I'm due to have my surgery in November 7, 2011 with Dr. Ortiz; my insurance company does not cover the surgery. I'm a little nervous, but I've prayed about it and hoping for the best outcome. I'd be in interested in others' experiences either with Dr. Ortiz or any of the other bariatric surgeons in Mexico. Also, did any of you follow up with your primary care physicians for follow-up visits? I'm just really curious...I've seen on the forum how many times others have followed up with their surgeons, but I won't have that luxury unless it's via phone. Any perspective is helpful!

I did go to my regular doc for a follow up, I DID talk to him about it before I went however. I had my surgery by Dr Kelly, but Dr Ortiz has a fine reputation.

Tons of us went to Mexico! The surgeons down there have been doing VSG longer than up here, and the leading surgeons down there are extremely reputable and excellent. I used Dr. Alvarez, and he is top-notch. Aceves, Joya ... others have excellent reputations, and we all had great experiences.
My primary care doc was on-board before I left for Mexico. All that was needed was follow-up blood work. There are hardly ever any complications from VSG, as long as we follow our surgeon's guidelines.
Best wishes for a successful surgery and an easy recovery! You will do just fine :-)

Thanks to all for your responses. It eases my mind quite a bit. I know I've made the right decision. Thanks again and I can't wait to "grow down" like all of you!
My husband and I just returned from Tijuana after having sleeve surgery with Dr. Ortiz at the OCC. I posted a review under his name on this forum.
The entire place was awesome! IMHO it was a much better experience than any surgery I have had in the US.
The staff was great, the doctors knowledgable and personable. The facility was clean, clean clean!
I know the cost was higher than some of the others but I really did like his ratings.
I just heard from another member that he was listed as one of the top 15 barriatric surgeons by NewsWeek magazine.
I swelled alot more than my husband so couldn't drink as much but the doctors told me not to worry about it yet. Then after about 4-5 days when the swelling started to go down I was able to drink the broth at the hotel.
It really was a breeze when it was all said and done.
Good luck to you!

Thank you so much! I'm so happy you had a good experience with the OCC, Dr. Ortiz and his staff. Sorry to hear you were so swollen after, but glad it was a breeze...I do look forward to getting it over with so I can start my new life! Please let me know down the line how both you and your husband are doing....best wishes to you both and thank you once again!

I used Dr Aceves, and would recommend him highly. The hospital was wonderful, very clean, and I never wanted for anything while I was there. My husband stayed with me and walked around the town and to the mall (it's in a very quiet safe city.) I received better care there than when I was hospitalized here in the states years ago. The drs were very attentive, and checked on me several times a day.. and took the time to really talk with both my husband and I. It was my first major surgery as an adult, and the first time I traveled for any medical procedure.
I receive very prompt replies via email from MX to any questions I have, which is nice! I also cleared this prior with my PCP who thankfully is a smart and open-minded Dr. He had no issues with me going to MX for this, other than wanting the name of the Dr so he could "check him out".. he gave me the thumbs up. He handles my routine labs, which is all I need. I also had an "in" with a GI surgeon locally in case, but never needed that..
