Definitely probiotics, and stay on top of your liquids.

Also, have you noticed it after you eat dairy products??? That was my sign that I had developed lactose intolerance, well that and the horrible gas.

I feel for you. I was 6 weeks out standing in line at the bank to make a deposit for work when all of a sudden I got "that feeling". Could hardly squeeze my cheeks together enough to make it out the door. Got about half way across the parking lot and all hell broke lose! Luckily I live about a half block away so I beat feet home and showered and went back to work. I had diarrhea for 2 weeks post op but had just started on soft foods. I haven't had any problems since I started on solids. Best of luck to you.

Condolences :-)  Other folks have told you what to do diet-wise and in calling your surgeon.  I'll address the Depends issue:

About a year and a half post-op, I had severe complications from a spinal surgery and ended up in a nursing home for a month.  Yes, they gave me Depends to wear, because I could not walk OR sit on the toilet ... and I was having horrible diarrhea from the antibiotics.  I wasn't incontinent per se, but when I felt a blast coming, the nurse with the bedpan couldn't always get there in time, and I made a mell of a hess several times.

As I lay in that bed in the nursing home, I thought to myself, "here I am, 56 years old (at that time), in a nursing home, wearing a diaper."  And you know what?  It was okay, because that was the best I could do at the time.

Good for you for not being too proud to do what you need to do at this moment in time.  This will pass for you, probably very soon.  Just make sure you are sucking down as much liquid as you can (water, tea, crystal light, broth, etc) to keep yourself from getting dehydrated.  Sip sip sip sip, my friend :-)

I got really bad diarrhea when I switched from liquids to mushies and again mushies to solids for a few days.  Reminded me of when my son's diets were switched as babies.  It went away after a few days both times.  Hope it gets better for you!

Thanks so much for the advice everyone! I started the probiotics as soon as I read a post suggesting it. I guess the surgery and not eating for so long could have killed many of the normal bacteria in my digestive tract.

I will e-mail my doc too. It wouldn't hurt to see what they have to say either.

Thanks so much for the support. I am sure it will all be a funny memory soon enough.

I needed at least one complication! Ha! Ha! Oh well, as far as complications and pain goes, I think this is a good one to have if you are going to have one. It's been an extremely easy trip for me so far, so I guess I am due a little bump in the road.

Thanks again!
On my way!!!!!!
