Doc says only 2 oz at a time of food or drink!!??

He says no more than 2oz every 15 minutes. I drink more than that now that I am out 2 weeks. Anyone have a comment on that?

I don't want to stretch out my healing sleeve but come on, 2 oz of liquid. On the next phase, he says to only eat 5 meals a day and only 2 oz at a time. So only 10 oz a day of food a day?

Please help me understand how I am supposed to be doing this. I am wondering if people with good restriction did that? I don't' want to mess up his work, but it seems darn near impossible to only eat or drink 2 oz every 15 minutes but still meet my protein and water quota for the day.

Please let me know what you all did.

Thanks so much!

I just had surgery and want to hear what others say about this.  I don't know how to do it either.

I have not had my procedure yet BUT the instructions my nutritionist gave me for post op when you start with real food say 3-4 tablespoons at a meal max.

I wouldn't meet my fluid requirements like that. I can pretty much chug water at this point - it goes right through me. Sometimes if I take tooo big of a drink, its uncomfortable for a minute, but then it's over with. Water isn't going to hurt or stretch your healing sleeve.

I eat about 3 meals a day - usually a 1/2 cup of food or 2 oz of meat plus a couple bites of veggies. I eat small snacks but usually just a protein shake right now or 1/2 cup of cottage cheese or yogurt.

Thanks for your reply!

Yeah, that's my question. I can't seem to get in all my water at that pace. During the 1st week, I could not drink faster than that, now it's pretty easy to get in my liquids but I do it more like 3-4 oz in a 15 minute period.

I think the fluids are totally doable at 2oz every 15 mins. That's 1 cup per hour getting you to 64 oz after 8 hours. If you have more time, you can get more in.  It's just inconvenient to remember to drink every 15 mins.  Use some protein shakes as part of your fluids to help.  It gets better/easier after you're healed.

Regarding meals---amount sounds about right to me. Not my plan but about the same amount of food. Looks like your surgeon is just breaking your intake up into even meals instead of an AM or PM snack. I think you'll be surprised how much 2 oz really is as you start eating again.

Good luck.

I tend to agree with the others.  Water and other liquids, you can go faster than 2oz every 15 minutes.  When you get to food, you'll start to feel the restriction.

I am almost 4 weeks out and eating pureed.  I struggle eat much more than 2 oz when it is meat (tuna, haddock, egg salad).  Sometimes less than 2 oz.

Keep us posted!

Once you start eating food with more substance, you might not be able to eat more than an ounce or two.  After a few months, you may be able to eat 3-4 oz.  Fluids are a different story.  If you can drink more than 2 oz, I don't think it would be a problem.  Most people have trouble meeting their daily fluids requirements, at least for the first few weeks.

Be sure to eat very slowly and take small bites.  If you eat too fast or don't chew thoroughly, you will likely be in pain.  It felt like someone was sitting on my chest!

I am 8 months out (and below my goal).  I generally can eat 4-6 ounces total at a meal - usually 3-3.5 oz meat and some veggies.  Soft things like yogurt I can eat a whole serving of.  I have great restriction.  I still weigh/measure my food and plan on continuing to do so at least for a while.  I've never been good at eyeballing poritions...which is one reason I was heavy to begin with.

Good luck!

Okay, sounds good.

I was wondering if you all drank more than 2 oz in 15 minutes during your healing time? If you did, do you still have great restriction now?

Thanks so much!

I had my surgery a week after you did, and I find that I can "let it get away from me" and drink more than 2 oz. every 15 minutes too, even the protein shakes.  I was actually wondering earlier today if I was somehow stretching my sleeve already by doing that.  Sounds like everything's okay though, from the replies I read here.  Phew!  LOL

Good luck to you on your journey!!!
