Greek Yogurt Taste Test
Greek Yogurt Taste Test
by Mandy Major
With its ultra-thick texture and pumped-up protein level, it’s no wonder Greek yogurt is quickly becoming a favorite choice for yogurt lovers across the U.S. Wholesome and healthy, it’s delicious plain or dressed up with fruit, honey or nuts. Given all the buzz surrounding this super-satisfying snack, WD decided to find out for ourselves which brand is the best. We dipped our spoons in plain nonfat yogurts from seven different companies; read on to find out which is the creamiest and tangiest of the bunch.Fage Total 0%
Score: 4.6 out of 5
What WD had to say: Our testers were delighted by this “rich-tasting,” “silky-smooth” and “creamy” yogurt that had a “slightly sour” tang to it. Although the sourness was a bit too much for some testers, it was generally a hit—and the yogurt’s texture made up for the difference. “My hands-down favorite of the bunch; it's so creamy and satisfying, it's hard to believe that it is nonfat,” said one reviewer.
Dannon Greek
Score: 3.8 out of 5
What WD had to say: A little sour, a little sweet, this brand was popular among testers for its “nice, balanced tanginess” and “smooth and fairly creamy” consistency. “I was pleasantly surprised—it almost had a slight vanilla flavor that I wasn’t expecting and I enjoyed it much more than most of the others,” said one taster. The biggest detraction: a slightly off aftertaste.
Brown Cow Greek
Score: 3.5 out of 5
What WD had to say: Overall, this was well received by the panel. Deemed the least sour of the bunch, it got points for its “silky consistency” and a flavor that was “just tangy enough.” However, it lost points with some tasters who felt it had a runny texture and too-mild flavor. “It’s not a very strong yogurt flavor and kind of tasted like sour cream, which put me off,” commented one reviewer.

Stonyfield Organic Oikos
Score: 3.25 out of 5
What WD had to say: This brand was a top contender for its taste, with reviewers enjoying its “very mild” and “pleasant” flavor. However, the panel was almost unanimous about one thing: its unappealing “watery” texture, which made it lose out on points.
Chobani
Score: 3 out of 5
What WD had to say: While its “thick and creamy” consistency went over well with testers, several felt this variety was more akin to sour cream than yogurt. In addition, its sourness was too much for many: “too tart” and “very acidic,” several commented. Another found its aftertaste to be slightly “metallic."
The Greek Gods
Score: 2 out of 5
What WD had to say: One of the more divisive brands to be sampled, some testers loved that this variety was “sweeter” than others, and mild flavored, with “almost a hint of honey.” Others found it to be “a little chalky,” with an off-putting texture. One tester said, “It reminded me of regular yogurt, but with a little more thickness to it.” Another couldn’t eat more than a bite, deterred by its yellowish tinge and unappetizing, lumpy appearance.
Yoplait Greek
Score: 1.75 out of 5
What WD had to say: Despite a “smooth and light” texture and a “milder” flavor that wasn’t very sour, this yogurt was not a favorite among testers. “It didn't really taste like Greek yogurt—just a thicker version of regular plain yogurt,” said one taster.

That being said, I've become addicted to icelandic style yogurt. The brand I can find is Siggi's. I think it tastes better and is thicker. But I still use Fage in recipes.

I use the whey that is drained from the yogurt in my homemade mayo as a food preservative ( will keep for months rather than a week...(recipe on internet) and it's a very good source of protein in many foods including baked goods using coconut flour of course. Nothing wasted!

The only brand I buy here is Fage 2%. 0% is OK but 2% is better and I even like it better than full-fat. I use it in all recipes that call for sour cream and make a TDF tzatziki! For sweet stuff (as with fruit) I just add a little sugar substitute and it tastes great!
