I drank them on full liquids but haven't had one since 2 weeks post-op. I get all my protein from food. I AVERAGE 75g/day (had 120 yesterday). It can definitely be done!

I faithfully drank my shakes, every day, until cleared to eat solid foods.  Even then, because i could barely eat at all, I supplemented with protein shakes.

ALL of my shakes were made with milk.  1% milk to be exact.  I used EAS Protein Powder (either Chocolate or Vanilla) that I bought in 5 pound bags at Sam's Club.  I also used various flavorings (extra vanilla, orange, strawberry, almond extracts, etc.) to vary the flavor.

If I regain 5 pounds, I go right back to shakes till I get those pounds OFF.  I refuse to allow myself to get fat again.

I tried over 20 brands, flavors, types and realized I developed a whey protein intolerance that hasn't left me in 2 years post-VSG. I also couldn't tolerate milk, even skim milk. I immediately puked, or had horrific cramping, gas and then explosive diarrhea. So, I never faithfully used shakes. I tried like hell to find one I could tolerate. Soy and egg protein shakes/drinks/powders were repulsive and I couldn't tolerate those in any form, no matter what I added flavor wise.

It didn't effect my weight loss, muscle mass, nor my hair. I don't think I had any less or more energy than others because everyone is different in that regard. I lost hair just like the other 98% of WLS patient between 3.5-6 months post-op. Once I hit mushy/soft foods, I was able to eat all my protein grams without having to supplement.

Protein is SO important for healing, so do keep trying. I don't blame you for not liking them with water - I have NEVER found a protein drink I like when made with water instead of milk (well, for milk, I use unsweetened almond milk - way fewer carbs than regular milk).

If you hate the shakes, TRY ANOTHER KIND. I probably tried at least 12 varieties before I found my absolute favorite that I still drink daily at more than 2 years out (Elite Chocolate Mint by Dymatize). There are so many different flavors and brands out there, and even the same flavor can taste different from different brands. I've done protein hot chocolate (chocolate protein shake made hot, topped with whipped cream), protein hot chai tea lattes (unflavored protein powder, hot milk, squirt of sugar free English Tofee flavored Torani or DaVinci syrup), and regular cold protein drinks made using a Blender Bottle (just milk and protein powder).

Some places seel individual packets of protein so you can try it without buying a giant tub (I know Whole Foods sells packets). My favorite early out was Jay Robb brand because the texture was so much smoother than most.

I don't worry about protein shakes as far as "drinking my calories" because I don't eat anything with the shake - it is my meal or snack. Drinking calories is dangerous when you're drinking sugary sodas, juices, etc., IN ADDITION TO all your calories from food.

I'm more than 2 years out, and I am trying to kick start some weight loss again, so I actually started yesterday with essentially a SlimFast-ish plan where I only drink my protein shakes during the day and then have a low-carb dinner.

Seriously, find a protein shake you like. I promise it exists. Edit (after seeing USAF Wife's post): assuming you can tolerate the protein mixes without major adverse reactions! Milk never bothered me, but I use the almond milk for fewer carbs, anyway. But it sounds like you don't have a problem with the milk.

Hiiiii Jill :)

I totally agree with Jill, as always.

Adequate protein is CRUCIAL when you are losing weight. Keep trying! I got 70-100grams of protein from the day I was sleeved.

I'm over a year out and I still have 2-3 scoops of protein a day. I find powder is a million times better with milk, a little cocoa powder, and splenda mixed in. Good luck!

All programs are different.  My Kaiser program forbids protein supplementation and wants everyone to get all of their protein from food, even at the beginning.  When I was cleared for full liquids I tried a protein shake in soy milk but found that the whey in the protein gave me the runs.  I switched to Muscle Milk Light and could tolerate that just fine.  I never drank very many protein shakes but do enjoy an occasional protein hot cocoa in the morning.  Now I can tolerate all protein powder but still look for ones that are lactose free.

My fav product is from Vitamin Shoppe.  It's called Bodytech Dutch Chocolate Protein Pudding.  It can be mixed with water or milk or almond breeze, soymilk etc.  Only 4 carbs and 25 protein and tastes great.  I just mixed up a packet to take to the office for breakfast this morning.  After 15 months, I'm still not tired of it.  I order it from Amazon where the shipping is only $1.99 because that's cheaper than the gas to drive out to Vitamin Shoppe.

Tell the truth? Holy ****man I was sweatin the question!  The truth don't come easy for this former fattie!

Protein shakes truth...too EZ
Yes I DRANK my MEAL REPLACEMENT protein shakes. Didn't get in the requirement right away..n had to 'dress em up' cuz they tasted & smelled like ROADKILL.

Have since found some XLNT protein SUPPLEMENT powders...like Jay Robb..pina colada, strawberry..I DOUBLE DOG DARE YA NOT to like those!  Get em at GNC, online. Mixes real well..no clumping

Throw in a cup of greek yogurt n stevia, or a container of flavored yogurt like carbmasters...makes it thicker, bumps up the count, more filling!  Make some protein supplement  ICE CUBES...keep yer protein shakes cold, bump up the count.

Get yerself a UNFLAVORED protein supplement at GNC while yer there...the whey protein isolate unflavored doesn't have much of an aftertaste at all!, mixes real well, not so bad clumpin just shake the crap outta it....put in in EVERYTHING!!  won't taste it. Get yer protein in ya. Add it to foods your have cooked already, or yer carbmasters yogurt, sf pudding makes a cake batter consistency, whatever. NEVER heat up protein supplements. Add it to cooked foods.

I HAVE TO SUPPLEMENT my protein to this day.  Its the only way I can lose weight!
I CANNOT STAND EATING SO MUCH MEAT! Makes me wanna PUKE!
My preferences/head has f****d up my weight loss....so I supplement  no biggie

Never could tolerate them.  BLECH!!!!  I would have loved to find one that I could tolerate and that didn't make me feel like I wanted to barf my lungs out, but, alas, it was not to be.  The very thought of them even now makes my gorge rise.

At only 3 months out I still drink one a day, I know I cant get all the protein I need from food, since my food intake is about 3-4 tblsps a meal.  The one I found that I love is Nutrilite by Amway. They taste great, are 160-170 calories, 4-5 carbs, and 25 g of protein. They are pricey at 42.00 for a dozen, but I figured I used to spend 3-4 dollars a day on junk food and soda and I need these and dammit I am worth it.  I also am into beef jerky LOL great protein source and the added salt help me drink more water.
