No it's not lap band & No it's not gastric bypass...it's the sleeve dammit!!!!
Yup, I had to explain it to the doctor who did my upper GI too when I was pre-op... he'd never heard of it either. I also ran into people getting hung up on the "sleeve" part, they think you've cinched your stomach inside some kind of sleeve-looking thing rather than turning your stomach into a tube that resembles a sleeve.
Now I just say "I had surgery to make my stomach smaller"... that seems to do the trick ;).

My personal pet peeve is trying to explain this surgery to someone who doesn't even understand their own basic digestive system, let alone our altered one. Yet to me this procedure is so easy to envision once you know the basics. It just urks me that people can be that oblivious to their own anatomy. What were they doing during all of those Biology classes, year after year after year, from grade school to high school? I'm not even expecting them the have any education beyond that! *Giggles*
I had to explain to a doctor what this surgery was just a few weeks ago and my concerns with my iron and potassium etc... He told me just eat a banana or two a day and that will take care of the potassium issue and went on to tell me to eat steaks. I looked at him, baffled, did he not understand ANYTHING I had just told him??? Or the famous, "Just eat more often"...yeah, but I'm not hungry in between my main meals. Another over the top concept it seems. *Giggles*

Every time I tell anyone I had weight loss surgery they'll ask, "Oh, did you have the bypass or the lap band?" And I say neither, that I had a lesser known procedure called a Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy where they basically removed 80% of my stomach. That usually seems to satisfy them. Some ask a lot of questions, some don't. Only one person I've told had heard of VSG and she works at a hospital where they do them and she does ultrasounds on a lot of pre-op patients.
