I thought the same thing during the pre-op diet.  However, now that I am almost 8 weeks out, I still do a protein drink in the morning as breakfast then just get the rest of my protein thru foods.

I use the Jay Robb or Smoothie King Gladiator because I want a low carb/high protein option.  The ONLY way I can stomach them is to use this formula and it makes them pretty tasty:
1 serving of powder (for JR it is one scoop/SK it's two scoops--the JR is too sweet to use 2 scoops IMHO)
8 oz of skim milk
14-16 oz of ice cubes (I use my shaker bottle to measure the ice before putting it in the blender)
Blend in the blender until all the ice is ground up.  The resulting drink is the consistency of a Wendy's Frosty.
If you can afford the carbs, you can also use fruit in them.
This makes a 20 oz shaker bottle full to the brim (probably about 24 oz)
As long as you drink them while they are still cold, it's fine but once it starts to melt !

I usually count 16 oz toward my daily fluid intake with these so I'm hitting two areas at once--protein and fluids.
