I'm 24 with no children (and plan to keep it that way for some time) and had a Mirena placed 5 months after my VSG. It has been WONDERFUL. I don' t have to worry about condoms (i'm allergic to latex and latex free rubbers are SUPER expensive), another pill to take was not going to happen and my surgeon said NO to the pill. It's not effective with rapid weightloss because the horomones store in fat cells. I discussed with my gyno and she knows I don't want children for a few years and she said the best option for someone in my situation would be an IUD. She did not suggest the paragard, she said they have more problems with those. We settled on Mirena. My "cycle" is 3 days of half-ass spotting. By about the year mark I hope it will stop completely! Good luck!

My kids are 8 and 10. Last week, I took my last pill (Seasonique - LOVE it) because of pre-op stuff. Hubby is getting the big V in early June. My surgery is in late June. So, that's one thing I won't have to worry about after... before will be a problem. I'm latex sensitive. Ugh.

I have the "Implanon" it looks like a match stick that they place just under the skin in your upper arm. I have had mine a year, and love it! I have not had any weight gain, I have NO periods, and supposedly, when they take it out, you are ready to get pregnant right away. ( No waiting for the medicine to get out of your system ) Very simple. They put it in and then you forget you have it!

I use NuvaRing and it works great for me. It goes in once a month and you still have your period once a month like normal. I have been on it for almost 2 years now and continued using it after my surgery. No weight gain out of the ordinary to report either. Check out their web site www.nuvaring.com they have helpful info there if your interested!

I've been on the pill, the ring, and implanon, and I loved the last two. The ring was super easy, I never noticed it was there and my boyfriend only noticed if fingers were involved. I set a reminder on my phone to remind me when to take it out/put a new one in, and it was such a relief to not worry about taking a pill every day. I don't believe I had any weight gain.

After the ring I switched to Implanon, which is a little rod that is in the inside of my upper arm. I had it for about 5 months before surgery and I loved it. It works for 3 years, I never had to think about it, and it TOOK AWAY MY PERIODS! My horrible cramps, my spotting, everything was gone. I was blissfully period-free from November-April until my surgery when it came back. I'm hoping that it was just a one-time thing and it will go away again, because I was loving it before.

With Implanon, the only side effect I had was breast tenderness. It wasn't fun, but the tradeoff was worth it for me. The only bad thing is that while it does the whole no period thing for some people, for others they might have lots of spotting for months.
