Great topic. I have every intention of losing every single pound I want to lose. I'm not paying any attention to any percentage other than 100%. Or more.

Thanks, something inside of me clicked when my surgeon said the average was 65-85% and that I should expect to lose somewhere in between there.  I REFUSE to be mediocre and I REFUSE to settle.  I will fight until my dying breath to beat this demon that's reared it's ugly head in my life.  I will NOT go "quietly into the dark".  I will fight, fight, fight.  I know somedays I'll lose, and some days I'll win but as long as the losing days come farther and farther between..... it's gonna be part of my eventual win :)

I honestly feel like it's the way we look at the battle that helps us win the war.

If your talking as far as calculating excess weight on the basis of BMI...I lost 94% of my EW. Technically speaking Im 5 pounds above a normal BMI....tho I did actually get there...then over the course of a year Ive gained 5 back. So I lost between 94 and 100% :)

94% is AMAZING!!! Congrats!!  5 lbs is what a "normal" person bounces between so in my book, you lost 100% of your excess.  Feels good huh?  I"ll be feeling good right there beside you soon enough!! Can't wait to get it started!!

Yer surgeon is talking PUBLISHED studies. NOT a particular individual's whether you or anyone else here. Ya know your mileage may vary. Ya want published studies, or yer surgeon to quote stats closer to 100% EWL with a particular WLS..then yer looking at DS

Could you LIVE with YERSELF if ya fall into VSGs category of stats? I dunno

Maybe DS is the way to go for YOU too. maybe ya would be happier with your results if ya had malabsorption vs. simply restrictive with higher data in yer favor.....ya know...THINK TWICE...CUT ONCE!

I highly doubt yer surgeon is criticizing YOUR expectations w/ this simply restrictive procedure either.
nor am I sayin ya can't get all yer excess weight off with VSG kwim?

This is YOUR journey! Its personal ;-)

Yes he was quoting published results to me but when he said that something just clicked for me.  I decided I didn't want to fall within the 65-85% that he was quoting.  I want more.

I've researched all the WLS that I have available to me and I feel the VSG is the one that best fits into my life and my lifestyle.  I'm prepared to make sacrfices and I'm prepared to give it my all to get where I want to be.  The DS isn't necessarily for me... but thanks for pointing out the stats in regards to it!

I definitely don't feel like my surgeon was criticizing me at all or my expectations.  He was simply going through the speech he probably goes through with everyone when he talks about results and expectations.  I didn't take it as a personal attack that I couldn't do it..... but I did take it as a challenge :)

Thanks for your insight and response!

I lost over 150 pounds my EWL is 80%.

I went from a BMI of 49.8 to 28.2.

I'm one that believes that BMI is not the end all of measurements. I'm content where I am and feel and look good.

If I got down to a normal BMI. I don't think I would look good.

Bottom line, I think your goal weight is an individual decision that you have to be comfortable with. My initial goal was 220. I would have been happy to stay there but my body had other plans for me. My doctor said my body will know when to stop. At one point I was fighting it and increased my calories. Now I'm along for the ride but I think that I'm about done. I've been bouncing up and down 3 pounds for the last two months.

Highest Weight: 380                      Consult Weight: 357             Surgery Weight: 309
Goal Weight: 220 (9/29/10)      Revised Goal Range 215-220         Current Weight: 224
Plastics: Circumferential Lower Body Lift - 11/18/2011
              Gynecomastia - 6/14/2012

150lbs and 80% is AMAZING results!! I do agree that your body knows where you should be and your body will get there when it gets there.  I'm looking to push push push and enjoy the ride!!

I agree with MikeyMike; everyone is not the same! My supposed ideal weight is around 132, but I know from the past and getting extremely sick, that at 140 I look awful, like a football player's skeleton, with big old knees and very  wide shoulders that still took an xl shirt, which hung off my skinny middle like a sack. I'm pretty muscular under the fat and know that around 160 or so, my waist was at 25 inches, an old size 8-10, not sure what it would be now, since sizes have grown so much but around 160-170 would make me very happy. I put 180 as my goal because I feel good at that size and can carry that much easily.

I think that this is a very personal journey for everyone and to each their own.  With that said, I don't know that the actual weight on a scale is what I'm going for.  I know my BMI would be "normal" at a weight of 160 but I can tell you this one thing... because I don't remember being that small...ever.... I think that as I get past that 200mark and I close in on 180 and then 175... I think I'll decide where I want to go on this.  But for now.... my eye is on the prize and NOTHING will get in my way. :)

Thanks so much for your honesty and your response.  I appreciate hearing everyone's opinions!
