Counseling anyone??

I'm finished with all the pre-op stuff and now I'm waiting until the insurance co. says I'm eligible to send for approval of surgery.  When I went to my psych eval. the therapist mentioned that I might benefit from talking to someone in dealing with the stress and anxiety I might feel after I have the surgery and start losing weight. He mentioned someone who was experienced with eating disorders and "this sort of thing".

I'm interested in finding a therapist / counselor before I need the help.  I'm wondering if that's what I'd look under.... eating disorders?  For some reason when I think eating disorder, I think bulemia, anorexia, and those things of things.. I guess over-eating or stuffing emotions and coping with food might also be included in eating disorders??

If someone out there also sought out a therapist to help them deal with the new lifestyle and stressors involved, how did you find your therapist?

Thanks,
Ginger

I asked my surgeon for a recommendation. He suggested a specific pysch on his list of psych evaluators. Made an appt and have seen him several times since surgery.

I'd ask your surgeon or even your personal physician for a referral.

I got a list of providers that took Tricare. Then I chose an addiction counselor because food is my addiction. She had me doing homework and wouldn't allow "I don't know" as an aswer to her questions. Turns out, Tricare sent bariatric patients to her for their psyche evals. I dont' see her much anymore, but I can always call her if I need her.

I highly suggest counseling.  Overweight is as much an eating disorder as the rest.  Though you'll be thrilled with the weightloss, you will have a lot to deal with.  Afterall, the surgery is just the tool for the physical; the mental part remains unless you change.

EVERYTHING changes when you have this drastic change.  Believe me, you'll want it, even if it's short term.
