Pre-op liquid diet to shrink liver

My doctor put me on a three-week pre-op liquid diet to shrink my liver.  He said it was to make more room for the surgery.  That the liver can be too big and sometimes they start the surgery, and there is just not enough room in there to do it and they have to abort the VSG.  So that was my inspiration to do well with the liquid diet.  The last thing I wanted to happen was to wake up from surgery and be told they couldn't do my sleeve!!

I have a friend who is an ultrasound tech, and part of their abdominal ultrasound exams is measuring the liver.  So, the day before we started my liquid diet she took some pictures and measured it.  We were both pretty skeptical that it would shrink very much.  Two weeks later she scanned me again, and dang if it hadn't shrank a lot!!  I was so excited!

So, if you're having to do a long (or short) liquid diet, know that it does work.  So hang in there!!

Cabcab, were you on all liquids or were you able to eat 1 meal. I'm on all liquids right now and trust me, I feel like I can eat a whole person right now.

It was an all-liquid diet.  I would have Slimfast cans two or three times per day.  I'd have broth (I'd make a can of Campbell's chicken noodle and then just pour the liquid in a cup to drink.  Sometimes juice.  My liquid protein bullets, and water.  And OMG, I could have eaten 3 people!!!  I was hungry ALL the time.  Real, physical hunger.  Not just head hunger.  But, like I said above, I had the inspiration of them possibly not being able to do my surgery if my liver didn't shrink.  It helped to have a specific goal.  And I did lose 17 pounds in those three weeks!

The first two or three days were the worst.  They drug by and I didn't think I would ever make it to my surgery date.  But I kept reminding myself about how time does go by, and that I would look back and think it went by fast.  And by the time my surgery date came around, it seemed to go by pretty quick.

I should say also, that I did cheat a couple of times.  One was a super busy night at work, I did have to get a sandwich because I was running on fumes and wasn't going to make it.  And then at the airport, the day before my surgery I had a ham & cheese omelet, breakfast potatoes and toast before I got on the plane.  I figured that my liver had already shrunk, and I rationalized that since I was going to not have much in the way of nutrients for a few days after the surgery, that I should probably stock up.  But I went back to broth and Slimfast that evening at the hotel.

How interesting about the ultrasound checks on your liver.  It's nice to know that it is working!
I am also on the liquid diet -day 5 of two weeks.  I am surviving but I am definitely very hungry.  Wishing everyone good luck -we are strong, we can do this!
 Peace!

My doctor has me on Opti-fast shakes and I have to admit, I really haven't been hungry.  But my eating has always been a habit so I want to eat regardless of whether I am hungry or not.  I've done really well, but I have cheated by eating a few of the noodles out of the chicken soup and also a meatball or two out of the Italian wedding soup that I should have just drunk the broth from.  I'm trying to keep LOTS of water and hot tea in my system and it is getting a little easier.  Hang in there!  My surgery is in about 10 days so I'm taking this seriously.

I have surgery coming up on June 18 and right now i;m on my 8th day of my pre op liquid optifast diet and for the most part i have been doing well. Just this past weekend I did have a big mess up and I just wanted to get your opinion on it. I have 6 more days of my liquid diet before i have my surgery.

OMG! I just saw my dr. yesterday and she put me on liquids until my surgery on the 23rd.  I am so glad to know that the diet works to shrink the liver.  I was a little skeptical, but I'm going to do everything it takes to get this done.  I've come too far to have the surgery postponed because of my liver.  Good luck to all of you.

Oh i'm so blessed to have read this. I started my diet yesterday and my goodness this is certainly a struggle for me!! Good to know its for the right reason and that it'll work for sure. :) In the mean time I'll continue with the greek yogurt, jello, protein shakes, and of course the fat free soups with no chunks..
