Anyone had episode of low potassium?
I have felt awful for about a week. Yesterday my heart started to race and I felt weak and nauseous. I started to have chest pain and my husband took me to the ER. My potassium was really low and they gave me some and then put me on a potassium supplement. I figure it has to be related to my intake and I was wondering if anyone else has had this happen
I haven't had this happen but this is pretty common from what I understand. First you want to eat as little salt as you can manage, then try adding lemon juice to your water or incorporating lemon juice into your diet (salad dressing, etc.).
Also consume avocados when you can as those are high in potassium (unfortunately also high in fat, so use sparingly), and an occasional banana for a treat helps, but those tend to be higher in carbs. Hope that helps..

I had low potassium early on. Now I drink an Atkins dark chocolate shake every day - it has the most potassium of any of the shakes out there - over a 1000 mg I think? And like Rose said, avocados are great too. I eat them alot. In fact, that was my staple food when I was on softs. I ate 2 a day the first month and still lost 20 lbs (of course, that was about all I was eating then!).
mine was a little low before surgery due to the blood pressure medicine i was taking. so they had me take extra before surgery. If you take a bp med or are otherwise dehydrated, this could be related. I read somewhere that prunes have more potassium than bananas. Hopefully they will monitor this so you don't end up in the ER again. Once i ditched the bp meds after losing some weight, potassium went back to normal and i needed no more supplements. diane
The tablets that Calli K. is referring to are called "K-lyte", which is short for "Potassium Electrolytes".
I had also brought up the topic of Potassium a few weeks... here is the link to that post:

There are a lot of food items listed as good sources of potassium.
