GOAL WEIGHT?

SO I started my journey at 277 and thought that for my height my goal should be 135. I am sitting at 200 pounds today 7 months out. I went to my surgeon for a followup today and asked what they think my goal weight should be...and I was amazed for them to tell me 175-150 but they would be happy with 175!  So of course I was overjoyed that it was more than my goal of 135...but now I wondering is 135 unrealistic? I was told by my surgeon today 135 was unrealistic for me...doesn't mean I cant do it, but it might not be realistic.
What do you think? how did you obtain your goal number? I am 5'6 and 28 years old if that makes any difference :)

I'd be curious for them to say WHY because at 5'6 175 is NOT a "normal" BMI...I know cause it's my goal and I never wanted to be small/skinny etc and for normal my weight would "need" to be like 145.

Are they saying 175 because they don't have faith that the VSG can give you 100% Excessive Weight Loss...because that is what it sounds like.

If YOU want 135 then go for it and never let anyone tell you it's NOT possible.

I was going to type out my own post, but it's easier to just say, "Ditto what Ms. Shell said."  What I did was set my initial goal at 140, which is a "normal" BMI, but I would really like to get smaller, more like 120-125.  Can I get there?  Who knows, but I will try.  Maybe you should try to set 2 goals: A "realistic" goal for a first achievement, and an "ultimate" goal for a second achievement.  Then if you make the first but don't make the second, you will still have felt like you accomplished one of the things you set out to do.  I think most of us don't really know what weight we want to be until we get there anyway.

I dont think they think its NOT obtainable with VSG...I think they just meant for my body structure 135 might be TOO skinny. I am sorry If I was unclear I am going to shoot for 150 and if I still feel like losing more I will keep going to get to 135! I like the part about setting 2 goals Longhorn girl!! GREAT IDEA!

Not sure what your "body" structure is but I always thought I had "big" bones.  After I lost my 100lbs, I'm 5'6 also by the way, I could fit the watch and rings of my deceased grandmother who never weighed more then 115lbs at 5'0.

I am 5 foot 6 also.  I am nearly 44.

Something I just did that was REALLY helpful to me was I got hydrostatically weighed.  Not the gym things, or the scales, but a dunk tank.

Here is why it was helpful.  My original goal was 135, just because it was the middle of normal.

When I went and got weighed 121 pound of me is bone, muscle and visceral organ.  So..honestly?  No, I probably could never get there and maintain without fighting myself about it, or gaining and freaking, because as long as I continue to build muscle - I will weigh more, ya know?

So, if you see if there is somewhere where you can go to the bodpod or get hydrostatically weighed, you can see what your body composition really is..what is weight that is not going anywhere (and you do not want it to!!) and weight that is fat and can be gotten rid of!

Honestly, I just got to a size I liked and called goal.

How did you do that?! Did you call a doctor or is there a place around you that you can go to get weighed like that??? How much did it cost. I SO wanna do that! Did you wait until you were at goal before doing this?

Its a mobile vehicle with the tank in it!  it cost 45 for the initial one, and will be 35 for yearly ones after!  They come to my gym once a year.

Durn, I did not see where you lived before I answered, google up your city and Bodpod or hydrostatic weighing - I bet there is something where you are!

I WISH I had done it before surgery and then again last year, last year the places filled up before I could sign up, so I did not, but this year I got in!

I was at goal before I did it, but you sure do not have to be!  I wish I had gotten it before surgery even, so you had a clue what was realistic with the structure you had going on!!
