protein shake side effects

So I haven't been shy about saying how much I hate protein shakes and how I'm hating this 3 weeks for full liquids. But I thought I would put this out there and see what you guys think.

I have only 2  settings: hungry and "i feel like i'm gonna puke". the latter is what i get after every protein drink. i've tried many. by the end they're all just too much. i can only drink 4 oz and by the end i just feel like barf. its too much. i really have grown to hate protein powders with a passion. before surgery i would just chug it and it was ok. now i have to sip sip sip and you really have to taste it now.

anyway i find that every time i drink a protein shake i feel like i wanna barf, lightheaded, sleepy. what does that mean? it happens every time. and today i drank a rtd protein shake witha  straw and that helped a lot to get it all in. however, within 5 min of finishing BAM all those feeling**** me again. what do you think it means? it goes away after maybe 12-15 min. but its not a pleasant feeling. this is why i am so over this liquid diet. i want food! 11 more days to go.

Order some high protein chicken soup from unjury.com

It's good.

You can also order unflavored protein packets and add it to beef broth and chicken broth.

One of the tastiest things I ate in the liquids phase was strained campbell's wonton soup.  You can add unflavored unjury to that.

I totally agree with you!! Im on full liquids too for another 8 days, and Im am so sick of it.  Im ready to eat something!
have you tried any pre-made protein drinks?  not the powdered.   my NUT has me on the pre-made Boost Glucose Control protein drinks and I love them.  strawberry tastes like a shake from mcdonalds, and the vanilla is yummy, chocolate has a bit of an after taste, but still ok tasting.

maybe call your NUT and ask if you can do something besides the powdered protein drinks.??

How many grams of protein do those have?

here is the breakdown of the Boost Glucose Control (they are for diabetics)
190 caleries, 4 g sugar, 7g fat, 13 carbs, and 16 protein .   plus full of tons of vitamins and minerals.

its the only thing my surgeon/NUT allows us to have so far.

All I can say is I feel your pain. I have been trying to find a protein drink that I can tolerate, and what I have found is that if it has 15g or less of protein per serving I can handle it. The problem then is that 15g or less means I have to drink twice as much or more since I am usually about 30g deficient each day. I also "cheat" and use a straw - I am very careful to not take too big of a swallow and I let it sit in my mouth for a moment before swallowing to (theoretically) let any air bubbles from the straw dissipate. I just find that using a straw makes it a lot easier to get down.

I haven't tried the unjury chicken soup yet. I have a sample pack and it frightens me. I tried unflavored and that stuff was VILE. Unflavored does NOT mean tasteless, unfortunately.

You don't need protein powders to make a shake.  Milk, greek yogurt, flavoring and/or fruit and blend. There are tons of recipes out there, eggface has dozens. Best of luck.

really???? greek yogurt? never heard of using that for a shake! thats crazy. i'll have to try that out. unfortunately i can't use a blender because the bubbles kill me. but i'll see if i can make something without it. i have greek yogurt. i add strawberry syrup (sugar free) and its good to eat. so i will def try this. thanks so much!!

Just keep in mind that greek yogurt only has about 16g per 8 oz cup and milk has 8g per cup. If you do half of each, then 1 cup of your smoothie would have 12g. I would have to drink three of these each day to hit my 30+ grams. That would be a lot of carbs, and quite frankly I don't want to drink three smoothies every day. Yuck.

You could add some protein powder, but then that sort of defeats the purpose of making shakes from greek yogurt, I guess.

Depends on the brands of products used, this is what I use:

Chobani Nonfat Plain Greek Yogurt per 4 ounces = 12 grams of protein
Valio Milk 2% 4 ounces = 5.5 grams of protein

I use 1 cup of milk & 1/2 cup yogurt = 23 grams of protein per shake

So your mileage may vary according to products used.
