Hi,
I was having alot of discomfort in my stomach and went to a gastro doctor. He gave me an endoscopy and told me I had cancer. He also said the surgeon who did my sleeve should have seen it.
Please check if you think you have ordinary reflux. I am heart broken

I'm so sorry, what a shock for you. I wish you the best. I don't know if your surgeon really would have seen it. I watched a sleeve surgery, and the surgeon really doesn't have an internal view of the esophagus. When they put the breathing tube down, they are going in the trachea - not the esophagus - and when they pass the bougie down, there isn't a camera to see. The camera really is only on the abdominal cavity and organs. It doesn't really matter in the scheme of things I guess, but I hate for you to think your surgeon did something wrong. My uncle had esophageal cancer and has done well. He is over 5 years out from it. I know the treatment is no fun, but you can beat it. Good luck.

Hi Laurie,
I am a cancer survivor. I know how hard it is to hear that word cancer. It is not a death sentence. It can be hard, and it can be mind numbing. There is a lot going on, and more will be going on. But you are going to be alright. If you ever need anyone to talk to, feel free to write to me. I have been there.
I do not know how your surgeon would have seen it unless he scoped your esophagus which they do not do during this surgery unlike the RNY. Maybe your Dr was thinking of that?

I am really sorry to hear about this.  Did you have an Endoscopy preop?  Most preops have an endoscopy preop to see what the stomach looks like and to check for HPylori and ulcers before surgery.  This is where they would have found it.  Is it Barretts Esophagitis?  I know this is a type of cancer of the esophagus from prolonged reflux.  This is a treatable condition  - hopefully they caught it early.  Some people with Barretts actually have an RNY as part of the treatment since RNY actually stops reflux and with the sleeve you are more likely to continue to have reflux.  Just something to think about down the road.
