Any Low BMI'ers that have had VSG?
Hello!
My BMI was 32.9 at time of surgery. I am 5'2" short and I weighed 178.
I am still 5'2" short, but I weigh 118-120 now!!!!!
I lost 60 pounds, love, love love my sleeve and I used Dr. Cirangle in San Francisco CA. ( I live in NV) Self Pay, easy with NO complications or problems.
Best decision I ever made!!! I'm sooo happy!
Good Luck to you!

Hi,
Don't know what your BMI is, but a lot of ins. companies will cover if you're 35 w/ one or two co-morbidities (high blood pressure, cholesterol, apnea, etc). I consider myself a fairly ethical person but, when it comes to insurance companies, moral relitivism is in order. I would have zero qualms in wearing a set of ankle weights under my pants to the initial weigh in and telling them I'm an inch shorter than I was (you can slouch) if it meant squeaking over the line (you can also wear your heaviest clothes and drink a big gulp right before you step on the scale. It's your health we're talking about afterall.
I myself, barely squeaked over a 40 bmi (no ankle weights but I did have a big gulp in me, had to go to the bathroom really badly and I slouched). I am very, very happy with my sleeve. Zero problems. Zero. I eat what I want just a lot less and I make sure to get enough protein and vitamins. It's as simple as that for me.
Good luck, or, if you end up going to Mexico, buena suerte!

Sleeve to DS revision by Dr. Gary Belzberg. Highest Weight (pre-sleeve): 325 (40.6 BMI) DS Revision Surgery Weight: 295 (36.7 BMI) Current Weight: 235 (29.5 BMI) 6'3"
You are quite right Marquismark. Insurance companies can sometimes be worse than what ails us to begin with. Love your "padding" ideas. Unfortunately my BMI is just under 32 so I'd have to do ALOT of that.
So glad you are happy with your sleeve. It just makes me feel even more confident about my decision.
Thank you!

Well, crunch the numbers. A 32 to 35 BMI is probably only about 15-20 pounds at your height and less if you slouch an inch. Do you have any co-morbidities - high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, diabetes, sleep apnea, joint pain, back trouble?

I do have high blood pressure but not a second co-morbidities. I want to get this surgery done a.s.a.p. so to do all that would, quite frankly, be too much to go through. I am lucky that I am able to come up with the funds on my own. If I couldn't, you can be sure I'd be investing in a pair of leg weights. LOL.
This information has been so helpful! I think that I will either go with Dr. Pleatman or Dr. Hoehn
When I talked with Dr. Pleatman's office I learned that he has done over 300 vsgs which I think is pretty high? and I haven't been able to find out that information for Dr. Hoehn yet.
For those of you who have self paid in a location that is not close to your home, how do you handle the follow up care?
