  • Abdominal pain and cramping.
  • Abdominal swelling.
  • Blood in BM.
  • Constipation.
  • Gas.
  • Vomiting (throwing up)
The actual twisted bowel is also known as strangulation and is very serious.  The death rate can be as high as 37%.  If you think this is something you may have, I would call your surgeon and talk to him.

The symptoms of a bowel obstruction depend on whether the blockageClick here to see an illustration. is in the small intestine (small-bowel obstruction) or the large intestine (large-bowel obstruction).

Small-bowel obstruction

  • Abdominal pain. Most small-bowel obstructions cause waves of cramping abdominal pain. The pain occurs around the belly button (periumbilical areaClick here to see an illustration.). If an obstruction goes on for a while, the pain may decrease because the bowel stops contracting. Continuous severe pain in one area can mean that the blockage has cut off the bowel's blood supply. This is called a bowel strangulation and requires emergency treatment.
  • Vomiting. Small-bowel obstructions usually cause vomiting. The vomit is usually green if the obstruction is in the upper small intestine and brown if it is in the lower small intestine.
  • Elimination problems. Constipation and inability to pass gas are common signs of a bowel obstruction. However, when the bowel is partially blocked, you may have diarrhea and pass some gas. If you have a complete obstruction, you may have a bowel movement if there is stool below the obstruction.
  • Bloating. Blockages may cause bloating in the lower abdomen. With a complete obstruction, your doctor may hear high-pitched sounds when listening with a stethoscope. The sounds decrease as movement of the bowel slows.

Large-bowel obstruction

  • Abdominal pain. Blockage of the large intestine usually causes abdominal pain below the belly button. The pain may vary in intensity. Severe, constant pain may mean that your intestine's blood supply has been cut off or that you have a hole in your intestine. This is a medical emergency. Call your doctor immediately.
  • Bloating. Generalized abdominal bloating usually occurs around the belly button and in the pelvic areaClick here to see an illustration..
  • Diarrhea or constipation. Either of these symptoms may occur, depending on how complete the obstruction is. Your stools may be thin.
  • Vomiting. This symptom is not common with a large-bowel (colonic) obstruction. If vomiting occurs, it usually happens late in the illness.

Blockages caused by cancer may cause symptoms such as blood in the stool, weakness, weight loss, and lack of appetite.

Lap-Band June 14, 2001. Dr. Rumbaut, Monterrey, Mexico.
Lap-Band removed after 7 years and converted to Sleeve Gastrectomy on July 7, 2008 by Dr. Roslin.  I've had three happy healthy Lap-Band babies.... and one VSG baby.  5 years out from revision to VSG.  Gained 55 pounds in past 5 months, now considering DS. :(

Whenever you have symptoms that concern you, please call your surgeon.  Bowel obstruction is nothing to fool around with.   With my first hernia my small intestine was wedged into the hernia....unbearable pain, diarrhea, vomitting.....it's the kind of feeling that you know it's not a stomach virus.   Now, get to the phone.  Hope all is well!

I had gastric bypass surgery in February 2004.  On May 28, 2007, I almost lost my life.  My small intestine had twisted, tied a knot around my colon and strangled.  My entire small intestine had to be removed because of grangrene.  Today I am on the waiting list for a small bowel transplant.  I have not eaten food in a year, I receive my nutrients intravenusely by TPN.

I am 9 yrs out and am needing some advise. I have had major pain in my lower right side off and on for a few years.  It hurts really bad when it happens, I have to lay on my left side, curl up in a fetal position, try to pass gas, (which I can't), take pain meds, and suffer.  It will last between 2 to 8 hrs, then in the a.m. I will have bad gas that is explosive, (sorry so graphic) and diarrhea, which can last all morning.  Sometimes just frothy water.  I went to ER back in Sept 2007 had a CT.  Showed nothing.  I was told it was trapped gas.  Considering what happens to me by morning I tended to believe them.  Every time I get the pain, I tell  my husband I know its not gas this time, it doesn't feel like it.  Its like something deep in me is tearing or going to blow up.  I beg to go to ER, and he reminds me what they said, so I wait it out.  In the a.m. when I pass gas I am so happy I didn't go to ER and I know they are all correct.  Well.....the pain is getting more frequent and hurts worse.  Always starting in the exact same place, the pains builds, fills my whole right side and I suffer.  It ususally happens a few hours after a heavy meal, but not every time I eat too much.  Recently at work it happened, worse than ever, I text my husband and said something is wrong come and bring me to ER, I don't care if it ends up being gas!  They did a CT and found some suspisious things that required a small bowel follow through, but nothing showing in the area of my pain.  A few days later I had the SBFT that ruled out the issues they were considering, but when the barium hit the Ilium area of my small bowel the pain started.  Not as bad as it gets, but bad enough.  My Bariatric surgeons office called me the next day and said Dr wanted to see me to set up a time for exploritory surgery as the Radiologist looked back at the CT and found "Vulvulus twisting in the Ilium area" and something about the blood vessels twisting.  My appt with the Dr was 2 days later and of course the pain was gone by that time.  By the way, after the SBFT each time I ate that day the pain came back, then subsided.  By the time I ate dinner I went into the worst episode I have ever had.  Having been told in the ER I was fine I went home and did my normal thing for the pain.  Anyway, when the Dr saw me he said he felt the CT was a false positive because I was not presenting any signs of this.  He is going to have the CT scan redone with contrast dye.  I will be doing that  Thursday..  He said if I don't have the pain nothing will show up anyway.  He said the twisting doesn't come and go, if it were that I would have have had this pain for so long and it wouldn't go away like it does.  He diagnosed me with IBS and gave me RX for 2 meds I am suposed to take 3 x a day! (no way!) He said not to eat any carbs, and no cheese.  And tiny meals.  I have been eating tiny meals, but normal foods with some carbs.  I have had no problems so far, but it can go weeks without showing up. I read on here that twisting doesn't show up on CT a lot and mine did show, so now I am told it isn't that.  I am scared he is wrong and one of these days it will be too late.  He said it won't twist and untwist.  Also, the CT showed I have very little Interperatanial fat.  Now I learn that is a problem.  I did get too skinny the first year and stayed that way a while, 128 now I weigh between 148 and 152.   I am sorry this is so long, but I hope someone will help me with this.  My Dr is very good, one of the very best, but, very bull headed when he thinks he is right.  I HOPE he is right, honest I do, but I know my body and I think the CT is right.  And it won't show up on the next one if I am not in an episode.  How can I get him to do exploritory surgery, like he had planned until he saw how good I felt when I went  to his office recently.
Thank you so much to all of you!

I cant say for sure because this is something I have only had for a year or so but it is SO obvious to me that things do twist and then untwist. I FEEL the twisting and it hurts like crazy like an oncoming charlie horse and I sort of freeze and elongate my trunk and hold my hand with a steady pressure over the twisted area to gently put it back and after a minute or so it begins to jerk or shake inside as the twist relaxes back out. It usually happens when I am doing something with my core and its not my abdomenal muscles because they are very tight and flat its just below them, but it is aggrevated by maying back in bed or leaning back to wash my hair in the tub and once it happens I had better be careful cause it will happen many times right after if I dont stop whatever Im doing that causes it. I can tell this is very uncommon and have been trying to figure it out online forever. The fear I have is that it will have to be an emergency for the doctors to actually see whats going on and I dont want it to be an emergency; I want ot keep all my bowels small and large. If you figure out what is going on Id love to hear. It could be my colon or my small intestine but the twisting and then un-twisting is very real!!! If your doc wants to see me thats fine. There needs to be more info and awareness about this!Good luck to you. Any input anyone else may have will be appreciated also, Angie

I have been experienceing the same thing, I told my husband, something in my stomache is twisting and it is painful.  It happens sometimes when using the bathroom, or bending over, sometimes when I am lifting or stretching.  If I stand up straight and wait for a while, rub my stomache I can physically watch it twist back around.  it is a strange pain.  I am to the point of going to the Dr.  A girl I know almost lost her life last month due to an obstructed bowel.  My only issue, is I can't control when it happens, so how will the Dr.'s see this, if it untwists before I see them.  ???  Dori
