Medic Alert Bracelet for VSG patients?

I was thinking about the possibility of ever - heaven forbid - getting into an accident and if a medical bracelet would be in order for those of us with VSG.  So I did some hunting on the internet.  I found a few sites that talk specificially about gastric bypass and that they should state something like "NO Blind NG tube/ No NSAIDS/ NO SUGARS.  I don't know what a blind NG tube is but I believe the rest are valid.  Any of you gone this route of the medic bracelet or necklace?

Hmmm, well the sugar and NSAIDS I would think not as critical as the NG tube--which I think is what they stick down your throat and into the stomach to pump it?  That is my guess.  Maybe some of the nurses will chime in later.  I'm not sure it is necessary.  I take Advil with no problem and sugar doesn't make me react, although I have had very little of it.  Just my thoughts.

you are a funny girl Christine!!!!!

I guess what I'm trying to say is, I don't think you can measure life in terms of years.
I think longevity doesn't necessarily have anything to do with happiness.  I mean happiness comes from facing challenges and going out on a limb and taking risks.  If you're not willing to take a risk for something you really care about, you might as well be dead

I take NSAIDS and sugar when I want it,  we do not have restrictions as VSG'er! I am not sure WHAT reason you would want a bracelet??  It would not be a bad thing for a VSG'er to have an NG tube WE are not RNY patients, PLEASE! we simply have had part of our stomach removed it is 'not that big of a health deal', really We do not have malabsorption issues either You could say on a big button on your shirt that says 'Ask me why I eat small meals' haha Really, it is ok And the staples kind of 'give it away' that you had WLS.... .

I guess I was more concerned about an emergency situation. On the way to the MD today someone crashed into my BF's brand new car.  Luckily we were already in the MD but it was a hit and run. It made me think about car accidents and in the unlikely event that would happen, I'd hate for someone to unknowingly help me and that at the same time hurt me.  You know, internally given the staples and small stomach size.  In an emergency situation sometimes gentle care is not taken, it's more important to do whats needed - which I understand, but which is why sometimes people use medical bracelets to inform EMTs. Oh heck, just the thought of a tube going down my throat and being pumped with something with force that might make my staples come off and allow me to bleed to death did come to mind.  So when I started to cruise the internet this bracelet thing came up. So when you ask "I am not sure WHAT reason you would want a bracelet??" - that's the answer.  Maybe I'm crazy?

I read somewhere that feeding tubes are a no-no for us, which may be needed in the event of a catastrophic accident or illness, then again only if we or a family member can not communicate our status. Mainly because there is no stomach where the medical staff is expecting one and the liquid pumped would go all over the place. Worth checking on this, I think.

Hello No need for a med bracelet for VSG (per my doctor)...are anotomy is still intact...no blind NG tube is referred to those who have "altered" digestive tracts i.e. RYN.

I don't know about the bracelet. My doctor gave me a walllet card with a diagram of the surgery, common complications and the importance of calling their office with any questions.  I wanted to answer the blind NG tube. It is a nasogastric tube, placed in your nose down into your stomach. "Blind" refers to putting it in at the bedside with no visualization of the internal anatomy. The other option would be to place with fluroscopy so they can visualize the internal anatomy. Hopefully, to avoid perforation or misplacement.  Hope that helps
