Does anyone know what kind of tea chinese restaurants serve?

For some reason when I drink the tea at a chinese restaurant I never need to put a sweetener in it. But other teas don't taste as good without sweetener of some kind. I would like to buy some to keep around the house. Does anyone have any idea what kind of tea it is?

Hi Topazie, In Australia they serv Jasmine tea at asian restaurants which is sweet when it is hot but takes on a slightly bitter flavour as it cools down. hope this helps, jane

Some use Jasmine Tea.  You might try calling a local restaurant and ask them what type they serve.  Also, have you tried "Good Earth" tea?  Their original and caffine free teas are very sweet, and I don't believe they add any sugar to them (but double check).

Hi Topazie, The tea in Chinese restaurants is usually oolong or an oolong & jasmine blend.  They also tend to brew it on the weak side.  If you buy it in teabags usually two to three minutes is all you want to brew it.  You should be able to find some good choices in any asian store or at a place like World Market.  Hope this helps. Topazie, At my local Dimsum restaurant they serve Chrysanthemum tea...mmmmmmmmmmm...  You take dried Chrysanthemum flowers and boil them in water...  It's the yummiest tea ever!  Plus, you can eat the petals from the flowers...  If you have any local Asian markets I'm sure they carry it...otherwise you can probably get it online...maybe eBay??? Is it a little savory?  It might be green tea with brown rice.  I absolutely love the the tea it;s VERY satisfying. Michele

My favorite Japanese Steak House serves green tea.  I've bought regular old green tea bags at Wal-Mart and while good, it's not the same as theirs, so i think getting something more authentic is the key.  I drank lots of decaf green tea after my surgery to combat nausea - it really works, so you might keep that in mind for the big day coming up.
